Startup Issues

Post by headcach »

First, let me note: This is /not/ a connectivity issue. Whenever this happens, I run Ethereal and check to see what packets are flying around. Always, packets have been going to and from my machine and the server.

The problem: About half the time I launch the game, log in, select a character, and loooooad, it will hang at the last triangle and never go into the game. The music just keeps on a-playing and, as Ethereal shows, packets still fly between me and the server.

If I kill Ryzom, wait a bit for it to unload completely, and relaunch, I usually get in.

I used to think it was just when running the game for a second time before rebooting, but that was just chance. It has also now happened on the first launch after a reboot, and really just seems to be a 50/50 chance whether I'll get in or not -- rebooting really has no noticable effect.

I have an AMD 64 (3400+), 1G RAM, 6800 Ultra, SATA drive, etc. All drivers are definitely up to date, as I kept trying to debug this problem.

I still have no idea what it is, but at least my workaround of just killing Ryzom and relaunching seems to work to get me in the game.

If I can provide any more information to help you guys debug this, let me know. I'm more than willing. :-D

[Further note: I still play WoW with some friends and don't have issues with it. I've played EQ2 with no problems. Eve Online, Lineage II, City of Heroes, City of Villians (I'm in the beta), and others I'm sure I've forgotten. Yeah, I'm a little addicted to these games. :) ]

Try talking with your ISP. A player with this exact same problem had it resolved with a quick call. Something may need a quick reset.

I have also talked to players who could not play Ryzom during prime time in their local neighbourhoods on a cable network.

Also some have had issues with the very latest nVidia drivers and describe the exact same locking up. Try switching to D3D mode or switching back to an earlier set of drivers. Also try refreshing the driver install, making sure to remove the drivers and reboot. And yes I know all other games work, but they are not the full 32 bit textures that Ryzom is.

You may be right on one of those suggestions. The ISP thing I doubt, just because I see the communications occurring. But the video is what I most suspect too. However, I'm just tired at this point of trying different driver versions. :-/ I currently have a set up that works, albeit only 50/50, and doesn't mess up any other games I play. So I guess I'll stick with this for now. Hopefully nVidia's next release will clear things up somehow.

The game plays great otherwise, 1600x1200, high everything. Let me know if there's some sort of debug mode I can run in to give you guys any more information. Perhaps knowing what function it's locking on can help you workaround it.

It seems like many people complaining of connectivity issues might not have them at all. And, since this is an annoying 50/50 thing, folks might think they've fixed the problem with something they did that was wholly unrelated. Maybe they'll happen to read this and just "try again". :-)

Well, I got a bit of experimentation in today and tried the latest nVidia beta drivers: 81.84.

First attempt, same ol' halt at last triangle.

Second attempt, logged right on in.

When it doesn't get into the game, the log.log just has what appears to be probes and acks over and over. Scrolling back a-ways shows some 'file not found' errors. This is very freshly installed and patched Ryzom -- as in within a week. Also, this is the same behavior as before when I first installed the game a few weeks ago. Some file names (can't cut-n-paste -- other machine) are: fusarc.tga GE-TR_Wea_trib_Pistolet_C1.tga, mextecreature.TGA, DummyTex, some .shape files. Well, all sorts of stuff.

The client.log looks pretty similar to the log.log.

But, just got into the game this next time and the (apparantly) same set of 'file not founds' occur. So I don't know if that's just "normal".

So anyway, if folks are having this "hang on last triangle" problem, just kill the Ryzom process, wait a few seconds, and try again. For me at least, it seems to work and not work every other time.

mhh you know, i'm getting this feeling that we're both having the same problem... only that my odds aren't 50:50 but more like 1:10...

this computer here at works seems not to have any trouble connecting... it also can't load those files, so those seem to be irrelevant. the only difference in this one is, that it doesn't only have a sequence of probes/receiving a "normal status", but there's some "synchronize->connected"; "CNetManager::update : Connection Ready." lines mixed in between... those don't seem to appear in the log on my computer at home... odd... do those lines appear in your log when loading fails?

If you stop the process and restart then a lot of the application is still in RAM. This stuff definitely looks like video initialisation problems.

Delete you log.log and client.log files and start the game fresh. Once the game starts and hangs please exit. Then send the logs to support-ee@ryzom.com and we will have a look.

aight, next time i encounter that issue i'll send my logfiles there...
just came home and it's working, just like it did yesterday that one, first time... i don't exactly want to push my luck by repeatedly logging off to see if i can lock myself out again ;) .
video issues could well be, there's two video editing cards in this computer aside from my graphics card and the case is kinda small so it gets hot real fast. i still kept the logs from yesterday when i couldn't log on, i'll send those if you want me to?
