thinking out loud... and in character...

maybe I should lead by example and quit using cats. Many others have done the same.

If we as a community feel that cats are bad, we should apply some social pressure against their use. We have no way to enforce these things, since they are legal. But perhaps a social movement against them could affect some change from within. Peer pressure can be more effective than laws.

Of course, it is easy to talk of not using cats when I've reached reasonably high skill levels and can safely travel through much of Atys. (Though certainly not all.) I can also remember not so long ago when I was taking my life into my hands to leave Yrkanis. I remember the frustration I felt as my more experienced friends spoke of places they visited that I simply could not, at least not without feeling like a useless burden on those with whom I traveled.

I yearned then for enough skill, ability, and experience to travel in relative safety. I knew that the experience and knowledge would only come with time and practice, but I also was painfully aware that a few crystals here and there would boost my abilities far faster, and I would no longer feel denied so much of my world.

So here I am, farther down the road. I've not yet truly mastered any of my skills, but I have come far. Some call me "Executioner", and others call me "Priestess". I can laugh at the gingos and raguses that once hemmed in my small world. I can take part in great battles and serious hunting parties.

I wonder, if I had not used the crystals, would I have survived some of my adventures? Or, being lesser skilled, would I have have given up and simply never left the confines of my home town?

And yet, somehow I feel let down. There are times when I feel like I am in over my head, with powerful abilities, but not enough knowledge. When I travel with my friends, I sometimes feel rushed, not quite understanding all that happens around me.

It is a great quandary. It is an easy enough question for those who are little affected by it. But for those who feel trapped by their own inability, such a question is a conundrum indeed.

Nice post Sasi :)

It's a thing called 'player skill' (as opposed to avatar skill). With cats up to your ears you end up with a character which is powerful but you can't play it correctly. From all the games I've played, Ryzom is the one with the most player skills needed to become an excellent player.

A lot of people recognize this.

I vote DOWN WITH CATS :)

But keep the OP's, a good battle once in a while is a boatload of fun :)

High skills are not needed to survive.....15 months into the game and my highest skill is 55.
I have hardly travelled from my start city ...yet I have learned every aspect of the area and can walk directly to my dig spots without the aid of map markers, I can name the tribes and creatures that inhabit the land around me.
I know the most amazing places to admire the combination of weather/season/time in the land.

Skills are not essentail for all aspects of Ryzom...and Cats are no use in obtaining knowledge of Ryzom.

I Love to hear stories of OP battles and treks from Others ingame.......I do not frown on others 'skill chasing'.....
But I have stated before, Why would a Game company wish to rush folk through an ongoing online world by giving semi permanent double xp ?
Experience is essential.....Wisdom is priceless.

A really cool post and a very refreshing read after some of the threads/posts lately :)

How could you ask to take out something that was over a year in development? Can we say "sore losers"? they where Implemented to be GvG, It was the community that pushed it to a FvF .Good organization in my opinon, to bad no one here is involved in organized crime or the world we know would be in trouble.Or at least have me asking them if they need a job.

Having gone a large portion of the road without cats (Master forest& pr dig/ two master craft branches/ Aod/ a master melee + every skill but one over 101 most in the mid ranges) I can say I understand how a lower level player can feel overwhelmed.
Yes I have used some small amounts of cats in my time, but I can tell you that having good friends and a good guild can more than make up for the lack of cats.

Through time you will learn more about your abilities and the game itself by forgoing the use of cats.

Once you learn your abilities and skills you'll find that many times what you thought was an impossible task can easily be accomplished by a group of 2-3 homins. Cats can be a great treat from time to time and immensely speed up those horrible final levels to mastery, but they really are not necessary for survival.

I have the highest respect for those that choose to forego the cats, and those in our past that flat out didnt have the things so had to learn to work their skills.

Cats or no cats? I say get rid of them completely- let your guildmates be your cats!

Just my 2 dapper-your mileage may vary.

I have had OP cats available since OP's were released. 3 Masters before OP's were released, ZERO since... It's isn't about that cats, it mostly a combo of dedication and finding teams. I am closing on a Master now just to have more fun, and tinker in many many things.

OP Cats cannot make you anything you're not dedicated to becoming. You seem to be doing fine, play the way you enjoy most.

Even Know there was a time when I could have fun at OP battles I voted "disable" for I believed when I first subded to this game :

- I was gonna fight against kitins and not peeps of my own kind which is now something nobody (devs included) cares about.

Then :

- I consider OPs as events killer, since it keeps most of the community busy not even noticing that the event team as gone silent for months now.
- It brought up aspects of the community I don't like.
- Cats ? I never used any and never will. I consider these as spoilers and community waster. Atys IS VERY accessible to those who wanna get to know it deeply, and I consider taking cats as a "walk around", preventing most new players who didn't know Atys before cats were introduced to actually realize what Atys is all about and how it all works.

Let just hope Jack is contagious :)

We could also add that OP may have been the Harakiri of Nevrax-GF...
The situation that was suggested in another thread: lets all Kami make some Kara alts and make a Kara world is actually really happening on Aniro:
All OP's seems now to be Kara with threeshold at 17 and they now stop having fun....
If you can read French

Some game boards are regularly spam with complaints of unbalanced classes for PVP and despite having no class on Ryzom, we could also talk about unbalance in PvP, as the stronger Guilds get access to cats which help them make stronger (faster lvling) members and to get more cats and to get stronger so they can get more cats and then get stronger to get more cats...

- Anyone wanna team, have fun, discover ?
- Cannot we getting stronger......

Sounds like dictature/slavery to me:
-you want cats?
You join...
- Ahhh you don't wanna join.... You dig then....

How many big guilds members have had solo players or lower guilds dig mats for them in exchange for cats....
So that they could lvl 4x faster....: 2x with the cats and 2x with the mats from their new found slaves....
While the non-OP'ed players would lvl 1.5 time faster as half of their digging effort would not go toward their own craft...

Very well balanced and that really explain as well while most were again losing their OP as well as against the Community OP: the damn Community OP made them lose their slave diggers.....
