Ok, so I saw a bazillion ads for Ryzom over the months in the gaming mags, so I decided to snag it. I've played for 2 days now, and have a character with 16 Magic and another with 10 Melee / craft / harvest. I have a few questions I haven't found answers to yet.
Is there a way for my melee to pull a critter from a distance so I don't have to walk into the pack?
With crafting / harvesting in the newbie areas, does the quality level of the tool matter? I dropped mondo coin on a QL 10 pick at the shop, but when it him my inventory, it was QL 1. Do I need to find a place that sells REAL QL 10 picks? Can I craft one instead?
Does the QL of the armor or weapon craft tool matter / help with success rate? If someone gave me a QL 30 tool - would it help or hurt me, and why?
My Mage has no crafting / harvesting. I purchased a pick, but can't harvest since it claims I don't have the action. What do I need to do to get it?
My fighter doesn't have magic but I noticed a 50 point skill called Learn Magic. Do I REALLY have to waste melee skill points to learn magic?!?! That makes NO sense if I do.
When Harvesting, is there a way I can get the 20 outta the node like the message states? I always get around 1 unit of 10.3, which rounds down to 10. Is there a better tool I can use to get more from a node? I tried a special harvest button that gives me a larger chance at harvesting, but I still never managed an 11. ???
With the missions - most are WAY outta newbie's league! Some of the crafting ones ask for special named weapons / armor. How do I get patterns for the ones with different names? I've yet to find a weapon / armor craft mission that I can do.
Is there any way to increase my run speed ( like AC1 )? Takes a long time to run around sometimes. Reminds me of EQ back when it was originally released - no sprint / SOW so you wasted all yer time running around.
On my mage, is there a way to have both acid and cold in one spell - in 2 colds to make a BIGGER spell? So far I'm not really seeing the point of the create a spell thing since many spells require 100% of the options. Does it get more diverse later in levels? When I read that you could create spells - I was hoping it was more like Daggerfall / Morrowind where you design yer spell how you want it with no restrictions other than your ability to use it.
That's all for the moment. I'm sure I have more, but I'm drawing blanks atm.
Thanks!

Use Taunt as a fighter to get single mobs and fear as a mage.
Theres a skill to increase run speed.
Yes, you have to spend the 50 points from 1 skill tree to learn another skill tree if you didnt take it at character createion.

Its a q10, just says q1, all tools are equal
My Mage has no crafting / harvesting. I purchased a pick, but can't harvest since it claims I don't have the action. What do I need to do to get it?
Save up 50 skill points in magic or fighting and then buy harvesting or crafting from the trainer

Yes, you do.

Its based on your extraction stanzas, you start off only being able to harvest up to q10, you can buy more stanzas to increase the quality that you can pull
With the missions - most are WAY outta newbie's league! Some of the crafting ones ask for special named weapons / armor. How do I get patterns for the ones with different names? I've yet to find a weapon / armor craft mission that I can do.
You have to have the specific pattern that they ask for, just depends on what you want to craft, its doubtful that you will be able to do all of the crafting missions on the island
Is there any way to increase my run speed ( like AC1 )? Takes a long time to run around sometimes. Reminds me of EQ back when it was originally released - no sprint / SOW so you wasted all yer time running around.
There is a skill that you can get later on that will give you a boost in speed for a short period of time but thats about it

Awwwwww... Kovah beat me to it. Bummer.
Here, I tried to answer some of your questions.
Is there a way for my melee to pull a critter from a distance so I don't have to walk into the pack?
Yes. Get the skill "taunt."
With crafting / harvesting in the newbie areas, does the quality level of the tool matter? I dropped mondo coin on a QL 10 pick at the shop, but when it him my inventory, it was QL 1. Do I need to find a place that sells REAL QL 10 picks? Can I craft one instead?
I don't think there are different quality picks. I had the same question and was told that the Q10 pick being sold by the merchant is a display bug. All picks are Q1, as far as I know.
Does the QL of the armor or weapon craft tool matter / help with success rate? If someone gave me a QL 30 tool - would it help or hurt me, and why?
Not sure about this one. My intuition tells me there are no Q improvements on crafting tools, either; just like picks. But I'm not sure.
My Mage has no crafting / harvesting. I purchased a pick, but can't harvest since it claims I don't have the action. What do I need to do to get it?
You'll need to save 50 sp in magic or fighting (if you have fight, I would suggest using 50 pts from that, since magic skills are expensive) and buy the beginning action pack from the trainer. It should be around the bottom of the list.
My fighter doesn't have magic but I noticed a 50 point skill called Learn Magic. Do I REALLY have to waste melee skill points to learn magic?!?! That makes NO sense if I do.
Yes, you do. Either that, or in another skill set; i.e. harvest or crafting. Sorry if it doesn't make sense to you; that's how it be.

You'll need to upgrade your harvest skill. Spend 15 or 20 sp on "Aggressive Extraction," or something to that effect. It will allow you to get the q20 stuff on newbie island, but you will still only be able to get 1 piece. I'm not sure how you get more than 1 piece. I'm not a big harvest person.
With the missions - most are WAY outta newbie's league! Some of the crafting ones ask for special named weapons / armor. How do I get patterns for the ones with different names? I've yet to find a weapon / armor craft mission that I can do.
Dunno.

There's a "speed-up" skill you can buy, but it's more for fleeing big bad meanie monsters. It doesn't last very long.

Also LB, read the guides like Varth suggested. And don't sweat anything you do too much right now, we are getting a respec sometime soon and you will be able to adjust any skills that you bought that you find out you don't really want/need.

Re: <-- NOOB with questions
Yes, you could buy Taunt, that is ranged and will pull out of a pack. (that is not its main use, but yes it can be used for that). Or you could get a low level magic spell to pull with from your magic line. But if you do damage to a monster, he often will bring his buddies with him.lifebane wrote: Is there a way for my melee to pull a critter from a distance so I don't have to walk into the pack?
The quality level does not matter and all tools and picks must be bought. You cannot make them yourself. So just buy whatever the Merchant is selling for tools/picks and you will be fine. With crafting / harvesting in the newbie areas, does the quality level of the tool matter? I dropped mondo coin on a QL 10 pick at the shop, but when it him my inventory, it was QL 1. Do I need to find a place that sells REAL QL 10 picks? Can I craft one instead?
The only tools sold are the ones from the vendor and all are basically the same quality so no it wont helpDoes the QL of the armor or weapon craft tool matter / help with success rate? If someone gave me a QL 30 tool - would it help or hurt me, and why?
If you do not pick harvesting/crafting at the character creation as one of your starting skills, then you must use points from one of the skill you DO have to 'open' this avenue for you. It costs 50 points which you can take from magic or fight to open craft or harvest. My Mage has no crafting / harvesting. I purchased a pick, but can't harvest since it claims I don't have the action. What do I need to do to get it?
Again, this is HOW you would open your magic line on your fighter. One thing you should understand in Ryzom, unless you want to try other races, ONE Character can do it ALL. They can be the best crafter, fighter, magic user, harvester in the game. You WILL have enough skillpoints if you max ALL the lines (but that is an insane amount of work). Most likely you will get yourself high in fight and magic and maybe one or two specific crafts that you enjoy. If you remake a new character, pick the starting packs of Craft, Forage and Magic (fight line is open for you automatically for some reason). Then you can easily progress in all 3 without having to worry about spending 50 points striaght off to open them. Points are a little scarce from 1-50, but after 50 you will have a ton of points as the lines splitMy fighter doesn't have magic but I noticed a 50 point skill called Learn Magic. Do I REALLY have to waste melee skill points to learn magic?!?! That makes NO sense if I do.
As you progress in the harvest tree, new skills will become open to you. There is a skill called Harmful Extraction Quality 20. You are only able to pull up to Quality 10 with what you start off with. You must purchase upgrades to your harvesting quality level to be able to pull better. What quality you pull is limited by the quality the spot gives (on newbie island max q is 20) and what your skill is. Right now I can pull up to quality 150 materials. But the zone I am in has to have them available, and if I am in a zone that can give quality 200 materials, i will still max out at 150 since that is my skill level. ???
You can buy different weapon/armor patterns with your skillpoints you earn in crafting. You will only have a few at first at the lower levels, but as you progress you will be able to get mostly all the ones you want. But you should pick one line to concentrate in. Like only do Heavy armor, or only do 2h weapons as if you plan to take your skill high, the leveling above 100 is VERY tedious and requires A LOT of materials. So unless you have a few years worth of spare time, concentrate on one and use the skillpoints you get in crafting to enhance that line (you can buy bonuses for the things you craft and make items have +hit points or +stamina etc)With the missions - most are WAY outta newbie's league! Some of the crafting ones ask for special named weapons / armor. How do I get patterns for the ones with different names? I've yet to find a weapon / armor craft mission that I can do.
Mounts are coming, no there is no 'sprint'. There is a Speed Up ability but its on a LONG timer, so its not something you can use all the time.Is there any way to increase my run speed ( like AC1 )? Takes a long time to run around sometimes. Reminds me of EQ back when it was originally released - no sprint / SOW so you wasted all yer time running around.
The higher you get the more abilities you can put into one action as you can afford to buy them with your skillpoints. You can use Sap points and Hit Points to cast spells with. (Sap is your power, ie green bar). But you have to buy those credits from your trainer to balance out your spells. So when you build your spell, if it is +20 you need to get -20 in credits. So you could use a -10 hit point credit (which would drain a little of your hit points everytime you casted it) and -10 sap credit (which would drain some of your sap). Or use all sap or all hit point credit. It sounds complicated but you will soon understand as you get higher in level. On my mage, is there a way to have both acid and cold in one spell - in 2 colds to make a BIGGER spell? So far I'm not really seeing the point of the create a spell thing since many spells require 100% of the options. Does it get more diverse later in levels? As I said above, ONE character can do all in this game. So you might want to consider consolidating. Also you mentioned WHY would you want to use Magic as a fighter. You can raise your skill in a certain line (like magic) even though you NEVER intend to use it and use the points you get in it to buy basic skills. You can buy hit points and hit point regeneration from ANY of the lines. So instead of using fight line points to get hit points, you would raise a little in the magic line and buy your hit points there. That makes you have more fight points to spend on fight abilities

Re: <-- NOOB with questions
Thanks a TON for all the info! I've gone through some of the guides so far, and am still reading more!
As far as using magic and melee, I'm hoping to use stun, root, etc. support spells as a primary melee... considering they're worthwhile.
I REALLY REALLY liked AC's skill / stat system, and Horizons class / magic system and when I read that Ryzom was openended on skills / classes / magic, I figured I'd give it a try.
Oh yeah, when I stated that I didn't understand why a melee needed to spend 50 points to learn magic - it's because leaning magic shouldn't DETRACT from melee in any way. Why should I be level 10 melee, with 50 less points to spend on my melee skills in order to learn magic, which isn't related to melee in any way/shape/form. So far, that's the only DOH thing I've seen in Ryzom.

Well, if you don't want to taunt, and this works for anyone, if it's not an agressive pack of animals (most of the agressive ones are single/pairs anyway it seems) then you can sometimes run into the herd and get one of their attention. Turning your light on and off works usually. Once one of them takes notice of you (you'll see the little eye next to their name meaning they are checking you out) turn and run from the herd and it will follow you. Takes abit more work, but is interesting and fun to 'bait' the things.lifebane wrote:Is there a way for my melee to pull a critter from a distance so I don't have to walk into the pack?
Nope! Magic is the second skill tree that you do not HAVE to put points from another in (fight being the first). however, you need to find someone who will enchant a weapon and fill it with SAP for you. That can be difficult on the island, but occasionally you'll find someone doing it. Then, simply use the enchantment from the weapon to kill things, and you'll gain those Magic XP quickly enough for you to get magic of your own. I've heard tell of some 'magicians' who only use enchantments, all their magic XP goes into SAP and SAP crystals, they get others to enchant their weapons, then use them. Works in theory I suppose.lifebane wrote:My fighter doesn't have magic but I noticed a 50 point skill called Learn Magic. Do I REALLY have to waste melee skill points to learn magic?!?! You most likely can craft at least something that they want. Zoraï basic daggers, for instance, are called 'Lam dagger' not just dagger, light basic boots are Nin-Ka boots (Nin-Ka the prefix for any Zoraï light basic armor), unfortunately, you don't find out these unless you ask others, or until after you get the pattern (I've ended up with several patterns I didn't want quite yet because I wasn't sure *which* was the one I was looking for).lifebane wrote:With the missions - most are WAY outta newbie's league! Yes you are able to combine multiple spell effects at higher level. Keep in mind, you are still at the infancy stage. As for making your own actions, they do become critically important, while you can use the 'base' ones, you can be a lot more effective by customizing your actions to suit your style of play (and everyone is different in this). Some may want fast damage spells that drain their life and SAP instead of slower ones, some may want slow, short range that are practically free to cast, etc. And it may take youa while to discover just what you like for yourself as well, so don't be surprised about that. As an example, I've been healing lately, I have two types of heal that do the same job. Both are fast, having no time penalty, one drains SAP, one drains HP. Effectively, this gives me more than twice as much 'healing power' since I can drain my sap down, then my HP while letting SAP regen, then my SAP while letting HP regen, and so on. It's greatly effective as long as the warriors can hold aggro (the fauna really don't like healers), and it's rare at the end of a fight that anyone in my group is down unless we get a few additional mobs, or something big decides it just wants to eat us.lifebane wrote:On my mage, is there a way to have both acid and cold in one spell - in 2 colds to make a BIGGER spell?
