Stuck at black screen

One more question, though--is there any way to make the loading screen move faster? I clocked it at about 11 minutes from character selection to being in the game...

you may try adding that to client.cfg file. but usually RAM, CPU speed and then HDD speed determines how fast Ryzom loads. video card (especially if it has shared ram), may affect loading too.
