Stuck at black screen

Post by klapaucius »

I've finally managed to download this game, and I started to load it up. I originally got the usual "will not unpack properly" problem, and I tried the second solution. This didn't work.

Next, I downloaded Klients and gave that a try. When I opened the program, it began spastically writing "only registered users...", as if my enter key were stuck. I went back and forth from Klients to Word and found out my keys were fine.

So, I tried fiddling with it on my own. I redid the second solution to the unpacking problem, making sure to be more thorough. This time, it SEEMED to work. I managed to get the client program to launch. A new window opened and I was greeted by what I assume was the title screen; however, it went black after that. It wasn't exactly frozen, as I can move the golden cursor around, and it just behaved as if I couldn't see or hear anything.

So, that's where I've left off. The only thing I could think of is that I sent the wrong files to the wrong places, but I wouldn't know what I'd need short of a list of all files and folders. Anyone have a solution?

Greetings,

Could you let us know what your system specifications are and if you are behind a router or firewall? The black screen is often an indication of a firewall problem, but can also be related to video settings.

Well, I have a notoriously horrible memory, so I wrote down my specs on a piece of paper for quick reference. As my luck would have it, of course, I can't remember where I put it. Isn't life grand?

Best I can remember off-hand is that it's a four-year-old laptop, running on a college wireless connection. Not the funnest set-up for online gaming, I've been told. It's a Compaq Presario 2100, says the label... I can't recall where to find the rest of the information. I'm almost positive that there aren't any firewalls up, though.

what happens when you run client_background_downloader_rd.exe from Ryzom directory and select Repair ?
seems like gamedev.bnp file is missing in data directory.

It isn't downloading anything new. That file's in the "data" folder--is that the right place?

yep thats the right place.

check client.cfg in ryzom directory. is it there ? is there line

Code: Select all

RootConfigFilename   = "client_default.cfg";
?
well, probably is, but worth to check. if client.cfg is missing or that line is not in there, create/modify it and add that line (use notepad). it needs to be exactly like i wrote. client.cfg is case sensitive.

does ryzom configure run ? (ryzom_configuration_rd.exe in ryzom folder)
force OpenGL/Direct3D (or what that second is) under Display. maybe it helps.

AHA! I'm missing that file!
...I can't seem to download it, though. It goes straight to "Ryzom has been installed successfully." It's not in any of the folders, either--just a MSDOS batch file of the same name. I tried running that, but it said it couldn't find the file you mentioned.

delete exedll_.ref in Ryzom/data directory and run ryzom downloader again.

but you could also try to add line

Code: Select all

Driver3D="OpenGL";
or

Code: Select all

Driver3D="Direct3D";
to client.cfg file to see if login screen will show.

This did the trick. Sorry for the delay, but this game is very addicting.

One more question, though--is there any way to make the loading screen move faster? I clocked it at about 11 minutes from character selection to being in the game...

Hmm, that sounds like an awful lot. What are your machine specs?
I would suggest lowering the graphics settings a bit but still.. Just out of curiousity, what did you set the driver to, OpenGL or Direct3D?
