30 seconds to go to every npc and read the mounds of dialog? WoW you got talent lol, honsetly any one know a good mage guide? I need one before I go nuts!wizaerd wrote:Really is nothing to fix... Here are two options, go around and see what NPCs there are, perhaps even talk to them? Or even better, ask someone from the friendly and cooperative bunch of other players? Didn't take me 30 mins, but more like 30 seconds...
[EDIT] there's also a very informative and entertaining starter guide available at http://www.ryzom.com/documentation/Manuals

Took me 30 seconds because I read the starter guide prior to starting... I merely listed the other activities as options to other beginners...jamesl wrote:30 seconds to go to every npc and read the mounds of dialog? Was gonna comment, but meh. I give up.
Re: Badly Designed newb area!
The mage mission giver and skill merchant are at a tent immediately east of Chiang's tower where you spawned, on the other side of the building with the pack animals.
If you right click on him or mouse over him, you will see the option MISSIONS. By doing his missions you will be given basic instruction in magecraft.

I think you may be looking for a guide about how to make an ideal mage build. This game is set up that there really isn't any way to mess up and there is no need to feel limited to one role or one "build." Seriously, other than reading that guide on how to basically initiate combat and cast a spell, the best way to learn is to do the quests from the 4 trainers in the starter camp. If you go to the Newcomer Welcome Board, you will find good sticky topics and many questions posted and answered specially for new players.
I would agree with people who elsewhere have stated that Ryzom has a steep learning curve. But really, if you want to cast your first spell, put on the magic amplifier you get as newbie equipment, target a suckling yubo and blast a spell. I think you get Acid Damage 1 or some initial spell with any starter role.
After you've died a couple times go talk to the trainer and get some missions and some instruction. The death penalty is pretty light in the lower levels so take some risks.

There really are no guides to character creation because everyone creates their character uniquely. Hence the reason in the "guide" you found everyone was disagreeing.

i'll warn you now rather than have another thread triggered by this: the mainland has almost no quests. most of the interaction is with other players.

If you have good suggestions open the support function and send in a suggestion. The support staff will be happy to send it along to the developers so they can take a look and they might put your ideas in the next update of the starting islandjamesl wrote:Ryzom's newb area NEEDS allot of work!

Re: Badly Designed newb area!
I'll take the course of moderation in this and have to agree somewhat with two trains of thought posted here so far. Since this is literally only my 4th MMO I've ever played I can sympathize with jamesl. Maybe a short welcome message arcoss the screen at first log in like" Welcome Homin to the Ranger camp outside the ruins of silan. Go talk to Chiang the Strong to find your way."
Likewise, my own experience was like that of telar. I, too, wandered around abit before talking to Chiang and was hooked right from the start. I'm afraid all too many MMO's hold our collective hands so much that when we run into a situation like Ryzom we feel alone and confused. At least, until we get our mind back in its proper place ad enjoy what there is to enjoy.
Either way, I'm glad Jamesl is giving the game a 2nd chance. I'm sure he will enjoy his stay here since he has friends here already.

Re: Badly Designed newb area!
I rather like it. There you are, a new refugee, undoubtedly disoriented from your escape, thrust into the middle of a well-established post bustling with activity as fellow refugees of various levels of experience prepare themselves to rejoin their peoples on the mainland. Short-staffed and overwhelmed there aren't enough rangers to hold the hands of every new refugee. As a hardy Homin who has managed to survive this long you take the initiative to explore the camp and learn what you need to join the fight to protect Atys.
Once you find the trainers the quests do a good job of getting you started and geared. I suppose the hard part for new players is to let go of their expectations from other MMORPGs and let the trainers give you a start in a refreshingly different game.
