Well, you could limit your hunting to the beasts which attack on sight. They would eat the babies of the cute animals, so you could rationalize it as "predator population control". :D

You'll be glad to hear that CSR take their job seriously in Ryzom, if you get verbally abused just write a ticket... it's very likely that you'll never hear or see that person ever again.
You'll also be glad to hear that even though there is a powerful macro language, it was designed in such a way that it doesn't allow afk playing of any sort.

You don't have to kill things in order to become an useful member of a team... you can always play a healer, everybody will love you as it is a challenging profession. Even more challenging is the job of an afflictionist... among other things you can root enemies in place, you can slow them down or you can fear them and make them run away.

If you enjoyed being a musician it's a pity if you didn't play Asheron Call 2... that game is discontinued now and for good reason, it was extremely buggy and unbalanced. However, it had the best music making system I had ever seen: each member of a team could play various themes at various instruments... the result of combining all these sounds was really amazing and unique.

I can vouch for that. I put in a complaint about some abusive language I got in a tell recently and the CSR were talking to me in tells about it in a few mins and was very friendly and helpfull. One of my guild did too back when we were on the starter island and got the same speedy responce and attitude.

beeryusa wrote:I have played as a musician in SWG since August 2003 and I still play as a musician today. The cantinas never worked perfectly. The AFK problem has been with us since launch and you wouldn't believe the verbal abuse that entertainers had to put up with before, during, and after the holocron craze, from players who simply didn't want to be bothered with heals and buffs and who blamed entertainers for their own impatience. Before the holocraze there were no buffs, but there were heals; during and after the holocraze there were buffs. Entertainers were the victims of abuse from players for giving heals before, and buffs after. Many players did enjoy coming to the cantinas, but some caused the entertainer experience to be not fun, and spoiled the whole cantina experience for many of us. This situation only ended when entertainer heals and buffs were taken away, and the new heals are instantaneous - which caters to the instant gratification crowd and removes most of the possibility for verbal abuse. Even so, post-NGE I have been the target of abuse by folks who could not even wait the two seconds it took for me to start playing. I have also been abused because I was enjoying myself outside a cantina and wasn't fast enough responding to a demand for a heal. I don't think you appreciate how absolutely rude some players can be. The fact is, many SWG players see entertainers as no more than a heal slave. In fact NPCs get treated better because players know that abusing an NPC is an empty exercise.

The SWG method could be made to work in Ryzom, but only if the developers made AFK entertaining impossible (as I'm sure they would) and only if GMs punished abusers so that the system worked in a healthy way. So far in SWG the devs and GMs have decided against such a course of action. I fear that a similar system in Ryzom would be contrary to the game's mechanics (as far as I can see there is no forced interaction in Ryzom) and would require a very hands-on approach to policing the game. In short, I think it's too unwieldy and has the potential to be a disaster, as SWG's system undoubtedly was.
Why does it have to be tied to Buffs?

It dosnt.

They complained to me all the time, and I've had discussions with other entertainers who remember all too well the insults. Maybe you were lucky, but I assure you I wasn't hallucinating, nor am I making up stories of a bunch of angry leets who came into the cantina whining about the artificial ties that they felt the developers had created to make entertainers viable.

Anyway, it's almost certain that Ryzom will not institute such a system. Ryzom simply doesn't work like that.

Yeah I remember the complaints about battle fatigue as well as alot of entertainers being very happy when it and buffs were removed from the game. Personaly as a combat player in SWG I liked the concept of needing to rest and relax after long stretches of combat to get back to full fighting speed. Although the game would have benefited from an alternative to entertainers (like an architect crafted TV or time loged out of game in your house) that would reduce it slower then entertainers.

So I've been playing the game on the island for nearly two weeks now. I've levelled up to almost 50 in offensive magic and armour crafting and, although I like the game a lot, the question I'm still asking myself is 'Do I really want to spend money on this game?'

I mean, sure the game's combat and crafting aspect work well, but I can't get into harvesting - it seems very counter-intuitive as a game feature design, and if I ignore that (as it seems I must because I find it annoying) I really have a problem with killing stuff as the only way to keep me interested in a game. It has never worked for me in the past. To be honest it just gets very boring for me. AI creatures always do the same things, and once you've seen it a few times it gets old.

If harvesting seemed more intuitive I might find more to like about the game from my non-combat-biased perspective, but still I'd be looking for either roleplay aspects (the lore etc.) and/or looking to relax in a tavern or cantina a lot of the time, and if the game doesn't have those things as possibilities I'm really thinking that I should keep my $15 and stick with SW:G's entertainer profession.

I think I need real human interaction on a level that doesn't just involve talking about what armour to use or what attacks and defences creatures have. I guess what I'd like to see is more 'world' - more depth behind the mechanics of killing creatures for loot. From what I've read about this game, it just doesn't have any of that on more than a very superficial level. The game lore is there, but it's not supported by any real game mechanics that I know of, and there's just nothing supporting any entertainer content - in fact such content is almost entirely nonexistent.

I want to have the game entertain me, but perhaps my needs are just not going to be met by this game. It's a pity, but there it is. I might put $15 into the game to try it out for a single month, just to see if there is anything at all that's going to hold my interest, but I feel the lack of musical/dance content, the lack of true player housing, and the lack of any 'Third Place' make this game little more than a more sandbox-friendly version of Lineage II.

I understand this.

I think alot of new players are getting the same feeling as you.
