Well, in The Flanagan Files, the Karavan actually forbids homins "to descend underground in quest of the dragon's lair for fear of stirring its wrath".

The lore section gets some rewrites now and then ... It can really mess with what you think are facts or common knowledge.

It was explained a long time ago that this meant only the deeper roots.
