As another crazy theory, inspired by some earlier posts in this thread and other snippets of lore ( some now vanished ).
My perspective on this is as a neutral, and that both "powers" are lying to us for their own purposes.

It is an accepted fact that Atys is an engineered world, it has been altered from whatever it was before to its current form.

My theory is that Jena was the head of the project. and that the immaterial Ma-Duk was the AI responsible for carrying out the project.

This has no practical application, but it makes more sense to me than all these claims of divinity and so on.

During the search for a new home many fell to the rage of the dragon. Some found a inconspicous planet. It turned out that the dragon lived on this planet and held many different peoples enslaved. The Karavan were very sad to see this and bid Jena to help these poor creatures. Jena heard them and filled the dragon with infernal fire which would consume him if he tried to spit it out.”

“The icy crust of the planet was thawed due to the dragon’s attempts to lessen his suffering at the same time as Jena started the green surge. From a dreary planet the life emerged at fantastic speed and tied the dragon to the planet’s centre. With the help of his self-consuming fire the dragon tried to free himself and burned lots of the sprouting plants. Jena’s might though was too strong, the dragon could do little against it. Atys was created and Jena commanded the Karavan to watch over the peoples; Homins, who were filled by her light and free from the influence of the dragon.”

“Though Jena warned the Karavan that the dragon would awake and hereby consume himself and all of Atys. So tells the legend at all...”
Wow, sounds strongly like the dragon is a metaphor for greed, power, war, etc. - things that could cause a homeworld to become uninhabitable, cause Karavan to fall to "the rage of the dragon," hold peoples enslaved, etc. and eventually destroy Atys.

Wow great imaginative theory! Love it!
This also would explain why noone has ever seen Ma-duk. Being an AI he simply doesn't have a material form. Now the Goo must be some sort of "bug" in the project that couldn't be corrected in time and somehow influenced the AI turning him against the science team....

Could you work on some more lore in this directioN? :)

Bizarrely enough I was talking to someone yesterday and they came up with that exact same theory; the "project" bit was a bit different but its interesting how "fitting" the Ma-Duk = AI thing seems to be.

Hmhm....

How about that:

The "Dragon" is a nuclear powerplant, needed once to power the terraforming manchinery. "Infernal, all consuming fire", "the rage of the dragon", sounds like metaphors for radiation and radiation burn to me. *shivers*
And the goo is just that. Radiation leaking from the Nuclear-Plants Core, contaminating the Sap and with it the giant growth that covers Atys and mutating some of the creatures that come into contact with it.
Tha Karavan are waering AC-Suits, and the Kami... ohmy...

And, the idea of an AI behind all this led me to remember something else...
HALOs Cortana...
Jena was somewhere described as a "being of pure light", a shimmering figure, that could be everywhere at once and some past Matis King had a device with wich he could "call uppon her" and she would appear to him in a shimmer of of light... if I remember correctly.
What if "J.E.N.A." is an AI? And her appearance a holographic projection?
A 3dimensional, interactive interface so to say.

What if both are AIs?

Or what if Ma´Duk IS in fakt a spirit, but Jena is the AI?

"Ghost in the Shell" meets "Neuromancer". :D

OOOh, I loooove this Backgroud and all its possibilities :)

Thank you David!!!
