there is a whole lot of flaws with comparing this to real life. In real life, you could get "ganked" but there is no respawn. period. thats it, end of game, finito. Ganked in Ryzom, you spend 30 secs laying there going "um... what/who was that??" and then you respawn *pop* you're back in business
Also, as you pointed out, there is a pvp tag to be turned on. By clicking it, you're turning on a features who's whole purpose is PvP. Its not there to let people know your faction (its a benefit of it, but not its purpose). it is, after all, called a pvp tag.
As a result of pvp not resulting in the permanent death of the character, you can't really compare RL death to IG death. RL is final, gone, this parrot is no more!. IG, death is more of a slap in the face. To be sure, not something one should take lightly, but something that happens hundreds of times a day globally. It stings, its annoying, its hurtful, yes, but its not final and certainly not on the same level as RL death.

Also in life, I don't have the ability to turn my tag on or off. I can't walk into a major city of a country at war and expect any bullets that come my way not to kill me. If i run into the enemy, I can't expect them to say "ah, no pvp tag... we can't kill him". In Ryzom, you get that benefit. You can limit the amount of danger you place your character in by turning the tag on or off. If you turn it on, you're knowlingly accepting the risk that someone may attack you and are therefore consenting to it. If you don't consent to pvp or are fearful of someone ganking you, why would you turn it on knowing that it could happen?

Ryzom made it very easy for players to choose the amount of PvP they want to take part in. if you're totally against it, there are PR region that aren't pvp (and those that are give you a bright orange warning that you're entering one and give you time to get out of there), and made it so OP battles set the default to neutral when you happen to wander in to one of them (you have to manually choose a fighting side to be involved in the pvp). Complaining that you were attacked when you had a PVP TAG on seems a bit of a stretch. If you choose to keep it on while AFK, digging, crafting, you name it, you have no right to complain that you were attacked.

having said all that, I don't usually attack another player unless they attack me first (that is unless they've done/said something that puts me off em... then beware!). I will admit that I tend to toy around with flagged karas... a fear here ("boo!"), a stun there (and my classic line "do you find me stunning?" :p ). I continue the Infinity policy of having my tag on at all times. that means when I'm hunting, digging, crafting, AFK, anything and everything. Have I been attacked while doing all of them, yep. Had some people gank me while I was standing there naked with a crafting tool in hand. Do I complain about it? nope, its part of the accepted risk of having the tag on. I go on about my business or I go and return the favor.

Great example of a response based on understanding other people's perspective without taking other's comments personally -- seeking to educate instead of perpetuating any hate mongering. Kudos and hats off to you, good sir. You're the kind of member of Ryzom's gaming community that I'm most proud to be a part of and have the honour of playing with.

[Edit] Comment was not intended against your post, Minou. Mostly intended to commend Komissar for not flying off the handle and fanning a flame fest the way some have shown on these forums of late.

All you vets know the zones that are pvp enabled - if you want/need to go there, then you accept/consent to the risk ;)

I have a question...

Is it "consenting to PvP" to trek newbies via ToT between Zora and Fairhaven? Or should we "just go the long way round if we dont want PvP".

To be honest, yes. To be realistic, noone would kill a trek in ToT. Kinda hard too, since a trek is always on the move, unlike diggers, and usually has more than 1 person who can stand up to a beating. It would take more than a lone PvPer hunting diggers to get a trek down usually. If you run into a group of them, just explain you're trekking. 9.9 out of 10 times they will leave you alone.

If you want absolutely no risk at all (aside from the mobs you might encounter), then yes, you should go the long way.

Regarding the Tag I´ve come up with a rather simple solution for myself.

When I meet someone who´s got it turned on I (my Charakter) simply assumes that he/she is of the Military. He/She is a Soldier that on his won free will accepted to go forth and fight for his Land/Faith etc.
And if someday my Charakter will have to turn on her Tag, I´ll assume that she´s commited to the Army ;) for a period of time.
As for "temporarily activating it", anyone heard of Militia, or Guerillias? ;)

The PvP Tag has it´s Name form the Game mechanic of PvP. It´s there so that people who want to play PvP can identify each other. You willingly and in full conscious decission turn it on, or of. It´s not a "peacefull Sign", its an agressive one.
While killing AFKers, or naked People and sitting people isnt honorable at all and should be treated accordingly RP wise, you have turned it on in your full and concious mind, so "you belong to the military of the opposite faction."
You accepted the dangers that come with it.
Nobody forced you to turn it on, nobody said it was just for show and decoration.
If someone gets you while Crafting, or AFK he/she´s an jerk with no morals and no sense of honor RL or RP-wise, simple as that. Let the person behind that charakter have his/her infantile fun and keep on going.
It´s pointless to raise a rukus about it.
She/He´s an A$$%&*, live with it, she/he´s got to do it too. :D ;)

Hmm interesting... And you add them all to your guild for the duration of that trek? Or it doesn't really matter if one or two gets eaten along the way :)

Nope, the "in team" healing bug has been fixed now. You can heal anyone as long as they are teamed, even in a GvG area (Only exception if they have an active FVF tag). So I've trekked a buncha people in the last few weeks, including a Reaper or two. No problems healing them.
