I had never played an MMORPG before and from the very first moment I logged in I was hooked. I played throughout open beta, was lucky enough to get into the Focus Beta and then played in the second Open Beta.

I even went as far as ordering a copy from amazon.de so I could play at release when we had the no UK supplier debacle.

I have dallied with a couple of other MMO betas/trials since but they haven't managed to hook me in the same way.
the exact same reason lol, well except that im now hookd on another game but jist of it is the same
ordering from amazon.de was so fun, thx to the random german speaker in klients

One day just got it in my mind to try an online game. Went to town looking for the starwars game, could not get a copy only found 1 copy of Ryzom. So decided to give it a try.

Great game, my very first character (Matis) got to about lvl 50 in foraging on noob isle, spent a few weeks there. Left the relative safety of the Matis Isle and went to Yrkanis, all of a sudden I found I had a lag problem (which I greatly reduced a few months late by increasing my memory to 1 Gb).

Decided I was not happy with the character so made a new one. Things were going well weeks after the second one arrived in Yrkanis, patch 1 struck.
It was like a large part of the population was being sent to the front line in a large war and not returning. Over 50% of the people I knew had vanished.

Things seemed to slowly improve after that but the population had been reduced. We had a stanza reset which was strange losing our abilities and getting our skill points back to use again. Which turned out great for my magic abilities but shot myself in the foot with foraging, took me awhile to sort that one out.

A long time passed more players had left and new ones had arrived, I got to a point where I was mainly just grinding forest and jungle foraging and crafting junk items to level in all crafting areas. Which ultimately started my yo-yo affair with this game (left the game 3 times).

Tried Horizons (which by this time was looking tired) did not stay long there.

Guildwars (great looking characters) but found the quests fairly lame so again did not stay too long.

Eve-online (space great! I like space games) travel from a solar system to a distant solar system on auto-pilot in the mean time have a game of football, shower and lunch. Space... oh no! there's nothing but space. Where are all the trees? As you can see did not stay too long there either.

WoW stayed there quite some time nearly 100 characters (majority between lvl 20 and 40 although some high levels). Have now finished with WoW finally should have been sometime back. Realised the only things I liked about WoW is there trading system and the ability for the characters to jump and swim underwater.

These for me are the things Atys does not deliver, the ability to swim underwater, ability to jump and the option to jump off of Atys if so desired (even though this means certain death).

As from yesterday I am now resident in Atys yet again, this time I've cut the string from the yo-yo, no more rebounds.

Played a few of the Beta weekends, then decided to go retail. Sat in town during Patch 1, left and returned a few times after burning myself out digging and crafting (had to actually fix my dig after i decided i was never gonna dig again before the points reset). Was part of a few guilds before making my solo guild i have.

Loving the game more, that ive stopped being so grumpy about things, and taking a light hearted look on things. Even learned how to Solo mobs again. Will be here as long as there is still a here :)

(I'm back!)

I played AO on and off for a while, but over a shared dialup connection there isn't a lot you can really do.

Once we got broadband I looked at finding another game to play and found Ryzom via Penny Arcade.

Looked it over and it looked like what I was after, good lore, different idea, reminded me of the RPG Mechanical Dream and French/Italian graphic novels so I thought I'd give it a bash during beta.

Lovely to look at, deep lore, great community and the theme (at the time) being presented was one of recovery from near apocalypse, the resettling and rebuilding of the land.

Even with the problems we've had lately and the direction the game has shifted in I've stuck with it because out of everything currently out there it still best fits my requirements and R2 will (should) allow me to do things I've always wanted to do in an MMO.
