May I tell a tale?

While sitting watching the sun set over Dyron lake, a tall warrior, obviously pursuing the final mastery of his art, approached me and enquired if I was the guildless Master of Life whose services he had heard were available.

Well what followed was a damn fine hunt of the Great Kincher in Void, with a healer who died at every Add (well, I was giving him my hitpoints) and a Swordsman who barely had enough magic to resurrect me.

Well, as hunts went, it was .... different: a homin of his abilities who could barely heal, that would have been unthinkable in my previous guild. But to be honest, I had had so much fun, I found afterwards that I had discovered a new home.

(of course swap out "barely", put in "could not" and the tale would have been rather less happy)

The heal spell thats around the level 100 mark is sufficient to rez people!

Getting your healing up tot his level i reckon could be done in 2 weeks. (when i think back to my 2 week trial i remember the people i teamed with were getting the priest title in the trial time)

Everyone is trying to let you be what you want to be as well as kind of prod you in the right direction. RP is great, but will only get you so far outside of the Thesos bar.

Player 1 (You) : Need a rez near the hard kipee near XYZ ! 2 minutes left.
Player 2 (Unsuspecting but helpful homin) : BRT
Player 1 : Thanks, that Kipee stun is no joke.
Player 2 : NP, GL Homin.
Later that day...
Player 2 : Need rez east of hard kipee near Javings
Player 1 : Sorry, I wanted to RP playing without any magic and never got the skills
Player 2 : Huh ?
Even later...
Player 1 : Need rez again near the hard kipee @ XYZ. 4 minutes left.
Player 3 (Another helpful Homin) : BRT
Player 2 : Bah, that guy just let me die after I rezzed him because he wants to RP without any magic.
Player 3 : Lolz... let him roleplay his way out of DP then !
Player 1 : Come on guys...
3:30 later...
Player 1 : Um, guys ???

Sure a dramatization... I left out all the things that Player 2 called you in region which probably would have stopped Player 3 from even responding in the first place :P There are folks that will heal you no matter how many times you ask or whether you can return the favor. There are those that will EXPECT a player in an open race game to "have" the skills if needed, it's not all about RP. You can RP plenty and still be prepared...

I think it sounds like a mix of using metachannels like /region for rez-calls and hardcore roleplaying. Being a nice social player vs playing a character. Always a trouble in these mixed environments. I know that playing with permadeath get my adrenaline flowing, but it really doesn't work in MMORPG's. And people expect you to rez them, especially if you team with strangers.

Have you thought about crystals? You could surely convince a mage to enchant your weapon to overcome this 'handicap'. Enchant it full with heal life and use as a lifesaver. Charge the people you rez with enough sap crystals.

(*smacks forehead* yes now I see several posts before me has already mentioned crystals. sorry)

Well, in theory that is viable... or would be if you had more than 100 Sap, which you wouldn't without raising magic. Also add in the lack of a bonus from amps for the spell level and it's not a likely scenario.

Now, how good a tank could you be if all you gear had to have sap bonuses on them ?

To be honest, I've never gotten into the habit of asking for rez. When I die, I'm dead, and if noone chooses out of his/her own will or kindness to rez me, well, there I am, and I'll have to quell a new dp monster. I have actually accepted that risk since I hit the mainland.

But I am considering getting healing magic now. Nothing else, though.

Btw, why is 'RP' referred to for the melee/range combat only, and what is therefore the term for those who use magic in battle?

You could also just say when you join groups as a level x melee that you haven't started on magic yet :P It's an acceptable excuse, and true, too!

RP as in Role Play. Maybe it was wrong to assume that your character has a "reason" to avoid magic spells?

Hmm. Yeah, what they said.

I don't think people will mind much if you don't use magic, but it will make things much more difficult for you. At around level 150 healing magic becomes something everyone in a team uses pretty regularly. When I went from level 200 to level 220, my heal was level 80. And I got some good-natured ribbing because it was so low. It is definitely true that high-level mobs can kill in one hit. I don't think anyone exists who can take a critical blow from a strong kinrey. Some blows will also cut through melee auras, etc.

I think you can get to level 150 with relative ease. But after that, combat in this game involves dying over and over again. It happens so often that the best combo right now is one healer and one mage - the mage dies all the time, but tanks die all the time anyhow so it doesn't make much of a difference (the mage can heal the healer which makes them much more valuable than a traditional tank).

Also you will probably reach a point where you won't like seeing people dead on the ground and having no way to bring them back - and some of them will get annoyed with you. It's frustrating to see a blue dot head toward you as you are dying and about to have a 400k death penalty, only to see them run past. If you don't heal, I would recommend having someone enchant a healing spell on your main weapon, and loading up on sap crystals as others have suggested.

I started doing this yesterday, as I was on a team twice. It does work, too.
I'll need to go to the main Ryzom website and find out what a "tank" is... heh.
What's the difference between a Healer and a Mage?
