The Ups and Downs of Being Plain

Post by anzhye »

My personal challenge to my char (Anzhye) is to be without magic; in battle, in healing, etc.

I've found that I have general power to heal myself, and have the option of obtaining some kind of "aura" power to heal myself and others.. but the aura power, is that magic, or a general Homin ability to learn? I figure that, if I can do general healing, that should be more than enough... besides, if I can heal myself real good, that's less sap that someone else has to use to heal me in battle. Can that not be a valuable thing, too?

Anyway, I'd like to ask feedback from you fellow gamers, no matter how long you've been playing... Is it truly less useful to have a fellow player who chooses to *never* use magic?

First you should play the game and your charachter in any way that you like to.

From a strategic point of view its very usefull if every person, no matter who it is that was the only one to survive a team-whipe can ressurect the rest of the team. Self heals and Auras are not sufficient to keep a player alive against mobs that teams battle, allthough they are/can be a great help when carefuly selecting a target to solo.

it's positively suicidial! having the ability to res a fallen team really is a must. I would be very unhappy if i was teamed with people who couldnt res me if needed. Imagine after a long difficult fight you are the last one standing, the other 8 members of the team are lying dead around you... not happy bunnies me thinks.

Some choices you make, while being coherent with your background and RP (and I applaud that) will definitely affect your habilities and you can be a little impaired in some situations.

If you are completely unable to heal (healing other is only available as a magical skill) you will not be able to rez your teammates in the event of a wipe (and they happen) unless you asked some one to enchant your weapon and load it. Even in that case, you will also need to buy sap crystals (to learn more about enchants and sap crystals you may want to look elsewehre). Also, some times you may be crafting or harvesting and if you don't have a weapon at hand, your inability to heal will be funny to explain, although coherent RP-wise.

I would suggest that, in a friendly way, you warn your teammates IC of your refusal to deal with magic, and I believe you will not have a problem with it....

Is healing useful? yes is it mandatory? of course not, and nothing better than a RP reason for that

...so, in essence, a person cannot truly be the char they want to be, cuz they'll lose RL fame, according to what you've mentioned above?

I hope I'm not the last person standing among the other 8 who've fallen.. I hope I'm one of the members who are strong enough in battle to help defeat the mob(s) in a long, difficult fight. This is my goal. I know it's quite a difficult challenge, but is it virtually impossible? (no pun intended)

*slightly discouraged*

Mobs are pretty hard to fight, especialy the ones teams battle.
The fights are more like quick and dirty(lots of damage) then long calculated battles.

A self heal for example buys you enough time to be hit exactly 1 more time, being a tank you get all the hits, the mob hits usualy very hard in amounts that are usually above your maximum health(if they use powershots)

then you can always find ways to play the game any way you like, for example hunt mobs that are more suited for the playing style. But if you want to take part in a lot of Boss-Mob hunting then there is a large chance for team-whipes, depending on the team youre in and the playstyle/strategies they have.

I appreciate your PoV. I noticed that there are upgrades to self-healing, and also the ability to run like crazy the Speed action) should I ever be attacked unarmed. Idano, I guess what I'm understanding now is that char *have* to have magic in this game. And no magic will count me as a lesser char of sorts.

...in any case, I really appreciate the input.

*clippy*

I didn't know that. That's something I should really consider...

...would that kind of playing style essentially keep me as more of a loner in the game? That's also something I need to consider.

Keep the input coming, it's really helping.

nothing is mandatory, if you wish to RP a character with no magic then more power to you. But i can assure you that however powerful and well equiped you are, and those you fight with your team *will* get wiped.

as suggested i'd be tempted to make it clear to those you hunt with that you have no healing abilities before you head out. but if you want to do it then do it!

i generally play melee put i made sure i have suffienct heal to bring up ppl if needed. In some cases i would say that it is compalsary to have the heal ability to a lvl you can rez ppl if you are planning to be in any form of team. Ryzom and the word solo player simply does not work
