Just having an extra box doesn't suddenly mean you can slide it into the rack and make it do what the broken one did. The simple truth is that the hardware that mmo's run on tends to be expensive and there is a limit to redundancy for any system.zanah wrote:But that's what you would do if you were a small business owner, or a home user... a serious business would have another server already built ready to be replaced/mirrored/etc.
Disaster recovery plans weigh different things differently. You have to consider cost, downtime, potential for dataloss, and all manner of other things. You also have to consider things like making a decision to rebuild a RAID array or go back to a point saved on tape. Tack on another important decision where you either run everything with no safety net, run some critical stuff with no safety net, or not run at all to prevent possibly needing to fall back to the last set of tapes. In short... 12 hours isn't completely unreasonable.zanah wrote:Well the right thing would have been to have a disaster recovery plan in place that works... If the backup server is that messed up, how long does it take to replace it and rebuild a new one from the main server? Definitely not 12 hours+ and someone with a little bit of brains needs to make the call after 2 hours of downtime... Any way you look at it, they seem very amateurish to me.

It's not that the normal server can't run without it, it's that they won't run without it. As much as it sucks, they are doing the right thing.
Of course this doesn't excuse 12 hours of down time. Maybe they will do something just for the NA customers to make up for this.....
(ok, it's a dream but let me have that dream just for a bit)
