Okies, first I should say - if you haven't already, check out the player guide forums (
clicky ). Some very good stuff in there, it'll take a little while to wade through, but just go for what looks interesting at first
Right, Malus/Penalty. Basically, say you set up a spell action. When you add the credits, you choose to use 50 sap, and 50 HP to cast the spell. If you wear light armour, and cast the spell, it'll use 50 sap and 50 HP, as you'd expect. If you put on a full suit of medium armour, and cast the spell again, you'll find it using say 58 sap and 58 HP. If you then equip heavy armour, you may see it using 75 sap and 75 HP. Basically, your spell takes slightly more effort than it should do, and the bigger the malus/penalty, the more effort (sap for magic, stamina for fighting, focus for harvest and crafting) you will put into it.
