Armour and weapons for magic users

Post by Erxi »

Hi :p

I just started and have got up to around level 10 in all 4 diciplines.

What armour and weapons are commonly used by magic users, and why? Which statistic on the armour should I look at?

Can ranged weapons or unarmed combat be good choices for magic users?

Where can I find a detailed describtion of what the statistics on items mean (especially for weapons and armour) ?

Hi there :)

For magic users, Light is the best type of armour. It has no requirements (i.e. you don't need to be level X to wear armour QL Y), and doesn't incur any malus/penalties when using actions/stanzas. Usually the thing you look for is a 'boost' value, i.e. boosting of HP, Sap, or Stamina. The boost value should really be 1/2 the QL of the item, for instance 20HP boost from a QL40 light vest.

Light armour, to balance the perks above, offers virtually no protection from attacks of any kind.

You could also use Medium armour, although it does incur a malus/penalty. It is a smaller penalty than Heavy armour, though it's still enough to make casting use more Sap and HP (depending on spell action setup), so is probably best avoided.

Thanks for your reply.

Maybe wearing medium armour when you solo and light armour when in teams can be ok.

Hm two key terms emerge here: Malus and action penalty. What do they mean?

Are they special pants that are good for magic users?

No problemo :)

Okies, first I should say - if you haven't already, check out the player guide forums ( clicky ). Some very good stuff in there, it'll take a little while to wade through, but just go for what looks interesting at first :)

Right, Malus/Penalty. Basically, say you set up a spell action. When you add the credits, you choose to use 50 sap, and 50 HP to cast the spell. If you wear light armour, and cast the spell, it'll use 50 sap and 50 HP, as you'd expect. If you put on a full suit of medium armour, and cast the spell again, you'll find it using say 58 sap and 58 HP. If you then equip heavy armour, you may see it using 75 sap and 75 HP. Basically, your spell takes slightly more effort than it should do, and the bigger the malus/penalty, the more effort (sap for magic, stamina for fighting, focus for harvest and crafting) you will put into it.

light armor is also not completely useless for protection. Soaking up damage yes, but if u get hold of high dodge armor it will come in handy when fighting mobs the same level as the armor. So for example wearing q100 light with 90%+ dodge you would find yourself dodging a high percentage of hits from sub lv100 mobs.

And yes as a mage i tend to use medium solo and light in teams ;)

In the end its defence/armor vs sap/hp.

If you want to be abel to solo magic use medium with sap/hp bonus. (at the cost of sap/hp)

if you want to groop and have a light use the light with hp/sap bonus. (at the cost of dmg absorb)

I use medium and no heavy cos in the end medium wil drain yor sap hap but you might just pump range and use the hp/sap credit on the armor. If i melee i dont die faster then a tank and my stam dhosent run out as fast as an heavy fighter.

I would say try it and ones you get used to it you may never want to use heavy armor again.

Did i mention its sexy on femail toons?

I suppose you ar on newbie island. If you come to the mainland i will craft you one for free.

Kind of.....

They are basically light armour 'pants' that look like a skirt on both males and females. I think they were put in for people that like their mages to wear robes. :)

AFAIK they don't give any extra benefit over equivalent light pants - just look different.
