Fuzzy screen?

Post by hans1976 »

Hi there,

after a really s**tload of troubles with my Radeon 9600 (mostly low fps), I switched to Nvidia. Asus9750TD 256. This is a really cool card!

Anyway, I run the game windowed 1280/1024, 32bits textures, 128Mo in SoR and apart from the inheriting of the Gammasetting (I could fix this editing some inf I think) all is well. Almost well!

The problem is that the screen gets pretty fuzzy, not very sharp. The screen is a month old, 19" IIyama flatscreen CRT. This problem is in fact only a problem with text, as it is fuzzy enough to make me squint and give me a headache. Enlarging the text only emphasises the problem.
I am getting a feeling it has something to do with antialiasing.

First off, I dont know what the auto setting chooses: D3D or OpenGL? I tried swapping this and I must say that in D3D the overall sharpness increases, but antialiasing is gone and my nice FPS is too. So I guess the auto picks OpenGL.

Now the question is: I love the graphics to be a bit fuzzy, it is called antialiasing ;-) But I want my chat to be as sharp as the scren can get it (which is as a knife). I must add that the lighting and shadows and everything is veryvery good in the OpenGL/Nvidia combo.

How to get sharp text?

Thanks in advance!

I think there may be a simple answer to this :)

You don't say what your desktop resolution is - if you run windowed 1280x1024, I'm guessing your at 1600x1200 or above. My desktop is 1920x1440 on a 22" monitor, and if I ran Ryzom in a 1280x1024 window on that resolution, I'd probably have fuzzy text too :)

"Real gamers run fullscreen mode(TM)" :D

But seriously, do you want that ugly desktop ruining your Ryzom experience? :) Try running fullscreen 1280x1024 - if your text isn't fuzzy, you've found your problem ;)

I run windowed at the 19" that is on 1280x1024 because fullscreen disables the 17" screen that is next to it. Having a fullscreen window allows me to switch apps very fast, while a fullscreen minimizes Ryzom when moving to the other screen. Very odd, iI hope I can find something to change this. (btw, both screens are on the same gfx card).

But to answer your question: I *think* I already tried this, but will start fiddling quite some tonight (or this afternoon, I dont plan to stay at work long today).

Thanks!

Aaaaaaaaaaah, multiple monitors :) I know the problem you mentioned, and I think (unfortunately) it's linked to the way Windows handles multiple desktops, and fullscreen apps. "Damn(tm)" :) I guess running one screen fullscreen while the desktop still exists on the other is a no-go - fullscreen effectively puts the drawing of the desktop (and any other apps running) into sleep mode, so the fullscreen app has 'exclusive' access to the screen (which is why your other screen then appears blank).

With that in mind, I wonder if Windows is interfering with the text display in particular - I think Ryzom may use standard fonts, and standard Windows text display routines, rather than custom-written font code (I could be completely wrong there tho!). If that's the case, the option in Windows to "smooth screen fonts" may also be playing a part.

So, you may want to try this: (I'm using XP btw, 2K may be slightly different if you have that...)

Go into Display Properties -> Appearance -> Effects, and uncheck the "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" checkbox. Then run Ryzom windowed again, and see if there's any change.

I will try that, I get the feeling that the dual screen setup is borking the gameplay graphics.
I have seen a slider in Ryzom that said: sharpness, I might use that a bit too (but only usefull in full screen mode.

Another thing that goes weird is that the 17" doesnt handle 85Hz well and when Ryzom boots, the 17" is swapped to 85Hz (and starts buzzing and so on).

Will let you know on the results (also the fps ;-)

Another tip for that one - drop Ryzom to 75Hz, since that's all you really need for 1280x1024 - you *may* get away with that frequency for a 1600x1200 desktop as well, tho I'm not 100% sure on that one. Easy to find out - switch to 75Hz, and look for some thin horizontal lines (window borders etc.) on screen - if they flicker at all or send your eyes a bit funny, you need to up the frequency :)
