Next steps?
Next steps?
Ok - Brand newbie here. Bout 3 hours in game. And, as with all games of this genre the manual is a tad sparse on documentation. 4 year heavy eq'er by way of a bit of background. Been running round the newbie camp killing some animals. Have to stop that it seems cuz they wander in like a pet and i'm feeling a tad guilty whacking em! Heh heh! So many questions I dont know where to begin! Do we have a con command? How do I know if I'm taking on something thats way beyond my abiliteis? Where do I head next? Should I try a mission? I know from my posts yesterday we appear to be a bit light on content at present. Do I simply just keep killing the adorable lil animals? Is there a single screen to summarize my progress? I do like a lot about this world so far but I wonder how long I'll stay interested simply harvesting, killing the lil animals and selling my stuff to the NPC's. On that note do the prices vary at all by vendor? Or is it all the same? Is there a place to see the entire progression tree or is it only revealed as you gain the exp to achieve it? I could go on for hours here with questions! Wish I did not have to work as most queries could probably be answered in game by playing! My apologies in advance for my impatience. I guress I get so little actual play time I want to maximize my in game time. I dont yet understand what my goal is I guess. Any and all guidance appreciated. The community so far seems so much friendlier so far than EQ. Graphics are waaaay better. And the chance to get in to a brand new world fairly early on is truly exciting. That issue of content and a purpose seem to be of primary concern now. I know we have a patch today but the notes on it do not indicate that anything major will be implemented. Sooooooo - fill my head with all the reasons you folks love your adopted homeworld! And, thanks in advance for all your thoughts, warnings and advice!

The 'con' of a mob is determined by the colour of the box in the target window and the number of stars there. More stars, the harder it is. The colours denote their level range.Do we have a con command?
Green(?) is the lowest.
Blue is up to around 50ish.
pale green(almost white) is around 50-100
orange is 100-150
red 150-200
purple/fuscia 200-250+
While they are changing the con system this patch, from the way it appears on the ATS (advanced test server, correct me if I'm wrong), is that they will be keeping the previously listed level range-colour, but the number of stars 'should' represent the level of the mob within its range (orange 4 star would be 130-140, red one star 150-160, etc). They will also have a dark orange star for named critters. How do I know if I'm taking on something thats way beyond my abiliteis?
It all depends on what you want to specialize in, or to not specialize in at all. Unlike EQ this is a classless game, where you could, with enough time, level everything to the max. Leveling multiple branches of skills will only help improve your character in the long run. Extra skill points (especially at the earlier levels) are always nice to have. Alot of this game is based on 2 things. Trial-and-error, and community advice. Most people in Ryzom are exceedingly helpful and friendly (they save the unsavoriness for the forums), so generally asking will get you the help you need for what to do next.Where do I head next? Should I try a mission? I know from my posts yesterday we appear to be a bit light on content at present. Do I simply just keep killing the adorable lil animals?
Yes, unless you remapped it, 'a' should bring up your action progress, which will show you your current levels in each of the 4 base branches. the '+' to the left of the branch will expand it out into the next branch. Is there a single screen to summarize my progress?
The world is pretty big once you get off from the refugee islands. Much to see, kill, harvest, and craft. And new things are being as time goes on. On the ATS they are having more involved quests available to do, which will be giving new skills and abilities (which they won't let us GET them(abilities)....spoiling our fun). They are also to be including new boss mobs designed for guild assault, implimenting faction and guild pvp, GM run events on what seems to be a weekly/bi-monthly basis(at least), revolving around a number of different events/conflicts(there is the kami vs karavan conflict, and the homin vs kitin conflict, and a strange new set of 'characters' who hail from a group called harbringers of <something, sorry it's late> who are having a hand in this as well).I do like a lot about this world so far but I wonder how long I'll stay interested simply harvesting, killing the lil animals and selling my stuff to the NPC's.
This patch is bringing back the impact of fame on pricing, so prices may(and should) vary.On that note do the prices vary at all by vendor? Or is it all the same?
In the manual they do show the branches of the tree, but don't go into what abilities and upgrades you can get at what levels. You can see the next level set on the action progress window, but nothing beyond that.Is there a place to see the entire progression tree or is it only revealed as you gain the exp to achieve it?

Re: Next steps?
Thank you my new friend! An extremely detailed and informative response. most helpful and EXACTLY what I was looking for. For the first time in 4 years I am indeed excited and intriqued by a new world. Perhaps a bit premature as I have only had the game for 2 days, But I must state that this board may be the most compelling reason to give this world a serious trial. The answers to my posts have been friendly, helpful and VERY interesting. I'm not a young pup and a mature, helpful and friendly world population is a strong consideration. EQ used to be that place but, sadly, no longer is. I thank you my friend!
Re: Next steps?
If you are excited or intriqued by what you have seen so far, just wait! The newbie Island is barely a lick on your icecream cone compared to what awaits you. I would agree that the maturity and willingness to assist others (playing w/the storyline btw)is one of the great things about the game.lily123 wrote:For the first time in 4 years I am indeed excited and intriqued by a new world. To add a little to what you have already heard, the 'k' key if you have not re-mapped it will give you a good intro to functionality. It is the key-mapping screen for all built in functions. In addition a macro system is ingame that allows you to configure some stuff the way you like it 'Shift-k'.
While you spend your time on newbie island, don't just pick on the innocent herbivores that wander up to you wanting to be pet. Wander out and find some carnivores that will teach you your own lesson. These will help you understand creature strenght and the Death Penalty (dp) system.

There are severla towns on your newbie island and you should learn to travel between them wither alone or with others. Talk to the all of the NPC's especially the welcomer that greeeted you when you started and you will learn a lot of the things you are asking here as well. The NPC's in your town may be different than from other towns, and have different things to offer to you.
Move as quickly as possible through your newbie phase, while making wise skill decisions as you will live with them for some time. When you come to the mainland (You will learn how by talking to those NPC's) you will be greted by a far more verbose land, and dramatically increased population, and in-game support to rival what you have garnered here so far. Player-run training sessions, lore, and classroom instruction as well as many player-run events. It is quite consuming already even without the additional content that is on the way.
A guild will go a long way to providing you extra game experiences and knowledge too. I would strongly suggest it, just be sure to pick one that suits your style.
Greetings made, and be safe on your journey young homin.

Re: Next steps?
To find a WORLD of info, please check the player made guides. I made one on foraging and crafting, Doubletap has a foraging guide. (that reminds me, once I get the hang of post patch one foraging again...I need to rewrite that guide).
Also under the GAME tab you find the HELP button, PLEASE explore this tab. The con system is under Game tab/help/interfaces/target. It has the FULL color listing, OH and if you see a mob running at you, don't try to "run for zone" mobs are MUCH too fast for you to make it, most of the time.
From EQ to this game the differences are:
Crafting system
method of gathering materials
UBBER LEET loot found on SUPER rare mobs that takes more than 100 to kill it (this is NOT in Ryzom, and may the devs NEVER ad camps to this game!)
Grouping actually matters in Ryzom but is NOT boring nor is it a YOU MUST kinda thing
The class system, you can be everything in this game...and I MEAN that. This means SO much more than you would believe it means. Want to HEAL this melee battle? go right ahead and level that branch up. Well this battle you want to nuke, have it your way and enjoy frying the mobs. Next round you want to slash, stab, thump or punch the mob, you can do that too.
(this means NO more groups dying when the ONE healer has to log for the night!!!! this means ALL in the group CAN rez ANYONE else that falls!)
The player maturity level is STILL higher than EQ (no telling if this will stay AFTER PVP is implemented or not...here is hoping!)
Welcome to the game. PLEASE ask around for help when you need it. If region is too quiet do a /who and pick a name at random, if they don't know...they know someone who does.

You may also be interested in the "p" key which I believe brings you to the identity screen, lots of good information there.lily123 wrote:....Is there a single screen to summarize my progress?...

Re: Next steps?
I continue to be totally impressed with the response times to my feeble posts. And with the well thought out and well worded responses. As i said earlier, I've been living in Norath for 4 years. Just might be time for a change. And BTW - 56 seasons here! Keep the advice coming, please! And I thought where I was was the WHOLE world. Well, perhaps not. May work up some nerve and go visit that transporter again and actually use it! Simply cant say enough bout you folks that have aided me to date. To impressed for words!
Re: Next steps?
Careful visiting that porter too soon. I have bringing people over from EQ and have recommended they get to level 20 at least in melee and 10 in magic before they attempt coming over and that's only because they have me to make them any armor they need. I stayed until level 30 myself because I didn't have anyone I knew to make me good stuff like I can for them. (I did come over before patch one but have since played other races and I don't really see any difference on newbie land since then as it is now). What race did you pick? If you need anything please send me a tell. I can go to any land. I can make you armor, a weapon and some jewelry. I am usually on after 5:30 to 6:00 EST. Till then cheers and GL!!lily123 wrote:I continue to be totally impressed with the response times to my feeble posts. And with the well thought out and well worded responses. Re: Next steps?
My amazement at the "friendliness" and sense of a real community continues! What a nice gesture on your part. I'll have to see where I'm at level wise, but feel comfortable that you will probably be getting a tell from Marbond in the forseeable future. I'm 2 days into the game and this board and I feel more of a sense of family than in my 4 years in EQ. I'm convinced it's due, at least in part, to the maturity of the peeps responding. For me, thats a major plus. I'll probably wander around the newbie area for the rest of the week. Friday night is taken up by the wife this week (a rare occurance) but I just may be bugging ya on saturday or saturday night. Getting antsy allready to take a look at the real world! Thank you again!
Re: Next steps?
Its like no other game out there. And there community cant be beat.
