Kitin and the AI

Hi all,
have recently started playing.
Since playing, I like the look and feel, the atmosphere, i really like the difficulty - the dangerous beasties, the DP, it is challenging - a big tick imo.
However, I choose Ryzom rather than WoW/EQ2 because of the active enemy AI, it sounded interesting to fight against an AI that formed armies, invaded regions of the map...that there was a war going on.
Reading the forums and talking to a few people, this dosn't seem to be the case.
Could anyone tell me what the current AI activity is? Is it taking and holding areas of the map, do its raids mean anything apart from the chance for a fight - are there any consequences for the players if the Kitin are successful?
Thanks in advance
