Can't say that I qualify as a more experienced player (still in the free trial period) but I can answer about the credit card question.
Yes, a credit card is required. A one dollar charge is refunded to verify the credit card is legit.
My experience with the community in the few days I have played has been great. I have regularly asked questions in region chat and got polite and generally usefull responses.
There is a great deal of flexibility in customizing your character in this game. Not just how your avatar looks but also what his powers and stats are. Unfortunately, to go along with the flexibility is a good amount to be learned. Being able to fire off a quick "what does this or that do" in game has really helped me alot.
One more thing if your thinking of downloading give the bit torrent download method a try. Not only was bit torrent faster for me BT resumed a partial direct download from nevrax.
Any alternative (other than credit card) billing options in EQ2?
I'll be waiting in newbie land for you.
Sporadicly inclined to delete characters is an affliction of mine but for the time I'm:

Thinkin of DLing the game trial -
Re: Thinkin of DLing the game trial -
I registered for closed beta testing in april 2003, I've been testin/playing this game ever since, so I think I qualify as a more experienced player.
You will find all over these boards and on the web, Ryzom has an original fantasy setting, has good action based (and classless) skill development, has some amazing and realistic gfx and animations, has a great, helpful and adult community and so on ..
But the things that kept me playing for all these moths aren't those mentioned above, its the support and the devs that do it. In 11 months I never had to wait more then 5 min to get a response from ingame support, or the support via klients chat. The devs seem to be really on it, updates are there when promised, the updates improve the game a lot, issues are resolved quite fast, ...
Nevrax is a new and still pretty small company, but thier only game is Ryzom, so its a whole company, thier whole dev team is dedicated 100% to Ryzom, and you can see that. They will continue to devote all their effort into this game for at least 2 years (they will start making SoR 2 after that, so part of thier - expanded? - team will devote some time to get the next release to work). I saw how much the game improved during the past 11 months, and I know this game will continue to improve that much during the coming years.
I've been in beta's/trials of the other big titles currently releasing, but Ryzom has my vote and it defenitly worth checking out. The devs listen to the community and bugs and suggestions are reported directly to them by the gms (there used to be a direct player - dev communication in the closed beta's, but thats, logically, impossible to do after release or during open beta)
So, I would suggest to check it out and experience the game for yourself and I hope you'll like it.

Re: Thinkin of DLing the game trial -
Open ended questions are hard to answer. Do you have some specific questions you are wondering?
The only thing I can tell you is that since the free trial started I have taken the time to create a new character and visit the noob islands. Each time I have found people that were very excited about the game. People who loved it and are addicted to it like other MMO's. In general people were having fun.
My suggestion is to try the trial. It does require a credit card (though a debit card with a visa logo will work). They put a $1 charge through for verification purposes only (it is refunded). If you continue after the 14 days you get charged for the game. If you cancel then you are competely free and clear of the game.

control panel --> software --> uninstall SoR (like 90% of the software is uninstalled
