Graphics Problem - Blank textures

Post by ilthor »

G'day,

After much hard work i finally was able to get inside SoR with my girlfriends laptop, a Asus L3D.

System Specs:

Amd 2000+ xp 1.6 Ghz ~

512 Ram (although 64 M of it go to the graphics card)

SiS 740 integrated graphics card (64 mb)

Windows Xp + Service Pack 2

DirectX 9.0c

It is a laptop, so performance was always going to be a litle worse than a regualar pc, but with the right configuration i get no lag at starter town, nice movement and speed, so quite happy. There is a big BUT though... The clothes and eyes textures of own character and some other npcs are blank spots, and some objects under shade have distorted colours (have you ever seen a black tryker? :P ). I have sent tells to their support, and although quite helpfull, they insist it might be the low RAM of the comp. I think if it was low RAM it would never even get inside game, the only thing it would do would be affecting game performance. To uphold my opinion i have my past experience with this comp and Horizons, a game where i had this exact same problem of textures not appearing. Their tech support solved it then for me, by providing me with a set of changes i had to do in the files (eg: change parameteres for textures or so...) to make Horizons work. But SoR's staff, although very much helpfull (they answer on the spot ingame and u feel like they are reading your support e-mails), do not have the answer to my problem.

Could anyone help me pls?

One of my friends had a similar problem (lots of textures were just white like a counterstrike hack) because he was using hacked drivers for his gfx card. This doesn't sound like it could be the same, but it might be worth trying out some other drivers.

I have tried 2 sets of the earliest drivers, directly from the manufacturer, none worked... just got myself another set of drivers, with WHQL, which although I don't think will be of any help will give me what to do about it for 5 minutes of tonight :P

I was just hoping on a knowledgeable "tech freak" to give out some hints of what might be happening, so i can annoy SoR CSR a little more. For what i remember of the Horizons prob (the same...) it involved some kind of texture configuration...

The white textures problem is happening because the laptop's video adapter is running out of texture memory. Ok its supposed to be a 64mb card but usually these things are onboard and the amount of memory they use can be adjusted. Check the settings on the viideo adapter in windows and also try and get into the setup screen to see if the memory can be adjusted.

Often you will find that 64mb is the maximum it can use, but because its just pinching system memory it gets defaulted at less than 64mb.

Also some laptops are designed so if they run out of physical system memory they reduce the amount of texture memory to the video card which also will cause this.

Bad or old video drivers can also cause this because they are not correctly detecting the amount of texture memory available or not clearing it out efficiently when processing new scenes, thus again running out of texture memory

So thats the problem, and you may or may not be able to put it right depending on the machine.

Good Luck

I got about the same problems when running the game in OpenGL mode.
I figured this would be faster as I use a ATI Radeon card and I thought it would be worth the gamble.

Some tectures (mostly the ones that are overlays as maps and so on) flicker on and off when turning around.

Maybe you can try switching back and forward to these two different modes? Or am I having thir reading impedement again in which this is already mentioned, but I was too lazy to read the whole thread?
