Farewell

Post by korin77 »

It always starts as a spark of hope. A thin line of black ink across a page written in a magazine, or strewn haphazardly across a webpage. A promise of a new world, a new reality, a new experience.

And slowly you venture towards this bright shining ray of hope, a world full of pixilated images. With animated creatures of 1s and 0s dancing across the shadows waiting for you to join them in a mirage of an alternate reality.

Along the way, theres always people. Other people. People from all parts of this world who are searching for something; something perhaps missing in their normal dreary lives. A hope, a dream. Or maybe just a chance to escape reality; to escape the every day monotony of being treated as a grunt, a nobody. For whatever reason, they come.

They greet and meet each other across this twilight of reality, each hoping that this time the bright sparkles will take them away from the real world. This time they will develop new friendships, explore this new existence of color and light together.

Words are important, for words are the medium in which one communicates in this imagined reality. Much like the real word, words have a deep impact, a strength all its own.

In the real world, you often depend on subtle clues, a gesture, a facial expression. You can easily tell if someone is happy, or sad, or angry or hurt. In the world of 1s and 0s, it becomes a emotionless picture, a blurt of apathy hidden in a image of innocence.

It is in this illusion that we forget we are dealing with real people. People who like you, sought out this bright spark of hope, this 2 dimensional existence of avatars all seeking to become what they could be. Whether they set their own goals, or just want companionship. They are. They are real flesh and blood, sitting behind a tube of electrons or light shone through a crystal. Behind a keyboard trying to express and understand, not only this strange world of imagination, but also strangers from across the continent, from across the globe.

And ultimately, it is the words. It is always the words. A wrong combination of letters typed in anger, in apathy, or simply carelessness. There are feelings hurt. Maybe its not as important as their real lives, their real hopes, real friendships. But somewhere, deep down inside, something changes. Maybe you didn't know them very well, maybe they were really as bad or as hurtful as you picture them. But ultimately, they were there for the same hopes the same dreams. There was always something in common. A shared dream.

It is then that this facade ends, for fantasy has met reality, and reality hurts. For we all want to be accepted in the real world, and lacking perhaps that, maybe we would be accepted by strangers across flowing electric impulses.

So there is silence, a snap of electrons as you hit the switch. There is darkness. It envelops you in a cloud of despair and sadness. For again a world died, not because an effort was not made, not because the images were not enticing enough, not real enough. But because you failed to make a connection, to real flesh and blood. To real feelings.

....And it begins as a ray of hope... Words dancing across a page...

Farewell Ryzom.

Thank you all for your kind words, but sadly the problem wasn't the game but something else. I hope to see some of you in other games. I am heading for the big one coming out monday.
