Optional Patch Files

Whenever the game patches it gives the option to download optional files. Does anyone know what difference they make when applied to the game?

They only tend to change areas that you are not currently in. For example if you are in matis you do not need the tryker patch since it doesn't effect you. Though that means that you have to patch the game when you go in one of these lands.
