Developing combat skills

Post by khayll »

Hello All! I was just wondering about some skills. Specifically Increase Damage. This skill states that it increases the damage done by all melle weapons. Does this mean that if I'm trying to increase my hand-to-hand combat this skill will be effective? Is hand-to-hand considered melee weapons? I would think so, but I was hoping someone could verify this.

My character is trying to become a wizard/fighter hybrid. Currently I'm at Magic Lvl 18/Melee Lvl 9. In my hands I hold a magic amp (this is considered hand-to-hand is it not?) and wear light armor. So far I have dumped much of my fight skills into HP increases and regen. Since I will be wearing Light armor as a mage and using hand-to-hand, is improving my melee worth it or should I just continue to dump fight points in HP increase and regen. I understand that this may be dependant on how badly I want to be able to be a hybrid, but I don't want to pursue the fighter aspect if I will severly lacking due to consistently wearing light armor and using hand-to-hand.

If anyone can provide any insight, feedback, and/or advice I would be extremely grateful. Furthermore, if there are alternatives that you see I may not be considering I would appreciate if those are brought to light as well.

I've only made a couple of posts previously, but I'm very grateful as to how helpful the SoR community has been. I hope as I gain experience and knowledge I will be able to pass it on to others as well. To all who reply, I gratiously thank you in advance. And to all a good day.

Increase damage works for all melee weapons. You get hand to hand combat from Daggers and err Magic Amps if you hit things with them (but that will change next patch with the gloves). These are both considered melee weapons. So you would just make your style as you normally do and add in the increased damage. Make sure to look at the info on the level of the increased damage you are using and that its proper for your weapon. You want to use the ideal increase damage for your weapon else you will burn too much stamina. For instance, if you have Increase Damage 6, that is good for Q90 weapons (just guessing here, not in game to check if ID6 is rteally q90), if you are using only a q50 weapon, find an increase damage level that is good for q50 weapons (ie a lower level of it). You do not get extra bonus because you are using a higher level of ID. So make sure the ID you use matches or is only slightly above the weapon quality you are using :)

You can be BOTH a proficient mage and proficient fighter, but it requires double the work :) Depending on how many special attacks etc you want in fight, depends on how much points you should be using for hit points/regen out of fight. You can also get hit points/regen out of crafting and harvesting if you wanted some 'free' skillpoints and were not using those lines. I get all my hit points from fight and still am able to keep my taunt, increase damage and ignore armor up to my level. I also get my stamina and balance from my fight and melee protection aura. If I wanted more special fighting abilities, like circular attack or warcry, I would probably have to use a few lines to get my hit points or level up in other types of fight to get extra skillpoints.

khayll ... not to repeat what is posted above.

I have found 2 other people that I routinely team with. I work melee and they work magic and we switch around while we are out doing that. You can do all 4 skills and be proficient in them ... it will just take you alot more time to get to higher levels that way.

If you are not against melee combat I would recommend that you level it higher to get a nice hp pool and regen before working magic though ... mobs tend to hit you for max damage while casting so the extra hp will definitely come in handy.

I would also suggest you get increased accuracy (doesn't matter your damage level if you can't hit the dang mob), and when you can afford the stamina hit, combine a increased damage and increased accuracy attack. My default melee atm is a +2 damage +1 accuracy and it seems a good balance.

I wouldn't suggest many of the other melee upgrades such as bleeding, stun even if you're using a weapon type that supports it. Ignore armor with spears can be useful for some players, but I haven't found it as useful.

The nice thing about being able to develop all skill branches is that you can tradeoff when you run out of one stat bar. I will melee attack until I run out of stamina, then mage attack until I run out of sap, then switch back, etc (w/ some crafting, harvesting thrown in if you feel like it).

Also since you seem to be primarily a mage, I would avoid heavy armor as it really cuts your magic range/increases your sap cost. I often use just a med. armor vest and sleeves and all the rest light when I'm mixing up my attack types, but switch to all light when I'm trying to level my magic.

I would concentrate on 1 of the skill trees until you hit 100. Makes it easier. Fight obviously gives you better HP, makes it easier to solo to, especially if you try to solo as a mage.

Always take increased damge. Always Max you HP.

Get some HP credits
Get a decent hp and stamina regen to deal with your attack stanzas useage. Split them up.
Dont worry about maxxing the regens. Eventually you get a healer in your group
that heals both stamina and HP at the same time so its not an issue.

For pikes/spears/daggers take Ignore Armor - you will understand when you fight a Kipucka.
For Swords/Aces take bleed - Great damage, although hidden
For maces and maybe H2H take slow - Never tried it.

You can combine increased damage and any 1 of the above attacks based on the weapon you use.
