Hi there and welcome to Atys
I´m pretty sure that you´ll find what you need around our giant rootball.
Honest answer:
In every Game there are aspects that you as a newcomer will be hard pressed to actually find entry in.
But "to keep up" should entirely depend on your wishes, in my humble opinion.
Some people would say: If you, for all the world, want to participate in the PvP you´ll better be grindin´hard and leave a smokin trail of corpses behind. I´m pretty sure it´d work without it too but some will surely tell you otherwise.
I for myself don´t PvP and don´t have any master, despite playing since release now and still quite enjoy the game. Don´t let yourself be drawn into any kind of race to any point in the game and you´ll be fine.
I can only speak for these boards, as I´m not on Arispotle (International) Server, but we´ve had our occasional fit of Chuck-Jokes, but mostly they´re abhorred. If we do tell them it seems to be only to make fun of them.
We´ve got better things to laugh about.
Sounds a bit elitist, doesn´t it?
Well, let´s just say most of the Communities members have long outgrown this phenomena (and Chuck Norris btw , eh SunCe? *giggles*)
Anyway, just see for yourself and get a feel for the game on Silan, then you can decide if it was (and we were) worth your time.

Re: New Player
Feel free to take your time to learn the mechanics and how stuff works, don't be affraid to ask questions and try to find a guild that offers you teaching along with the usual gear and leveling. Chose your guild, don't let them recruit you. Decide what you want to do.
I've noticed a sad tendency recently of people who get recruited right off the island, geared up and powerleveled and they leave after 2 weeks because they were only shown the grind and never taught how to be autonomous. It makes me sad to see them being trained to be nothing better than cannon fodder on the Outpost Battle scene.
If you want to get a master in two weeks, go ahead, but be warned : the burnout risks are high. The game doesn't limit you to one skills and the various skills actually benefit from each other in various ways. Don't feel obligated to rush through levels unless that's what you really want to do. Don't feel limited to talk only to people of your own guild : there are tons of friendly people out there in both factions and spread between the many guilds. The more people you get to know, the easier your progression will be.
Everybody can do anything they want, but speeding through your progression in a particular skill doesn't necessarly make them competent at it. I've seen 4 years old veterans with no master being more knowledgeable and competent at their skills than some power-leveled multi-masters.
Take your time to learn. Some things in this game depend uniquely on player skills and being a high level might help but won't save you indefinitely if you don't know how to react or in which direction you can run away safely. You can't be a real master if you don't know the basics.
I wish you to find good teachers.

Re: New Player
very true, even most multi masters usually have alot of lower levels they can work alongside new playerscarswell13 wrote: 1-This game gives the impression that I do not need to play every day, all day, to "keep up with the jones's, so I don't fall behind." Is this true?
99% free of chuck norris, occasionally someone will spam crap but its far from barrens as it could becarswell13 wrote:2- Is the community truly as kind and honorable as I have read? I still shudder when I see or hear someone say Warcraft or The Barrens. Will I finally be free of Chuck Norris jokes?
other quick advice is join a good helpfull guild rather than the first that spam invite you, it makes a hell of a difference.
Re: New Player
welcome to ryzom, I really hope that you enjoy the game, any further questions feel free to send a /tell scorpius in game.
Re: New Player
Hi carswell, here is a link to a list of guilds, each post has a little information on what they are like :
http://forums.ryzom.com/forumdisplay.php?f=114
I know what you mean about all those other games, I have played most MMO's but always consider Ryzom my true home
No love here for the Chuckster
One of the great things about Ryzom is that you dont need to make alts, as your main charactr can learn and use all skills available, some of the skills actually compliment other skills, for example, if you train Melee, it will build up your constitution, which in turn will help you with your spellcasting.
In my opinion, you will really need to join a guild to progress smoothly in Ryzom, because most people are in guilds, you may find it difficult to get teams to hunt with, as they are all out hunting with their guild members.
As mentioned, please be careful with the guild you choose, guilds that spam blind invites, usually get the type of members they deserve.
Universe Chat is a chat system that has new and old players, for asking advice and giving it, if you need any equipment or help, you will get plenty there, to make your journey through Ryzom more pleasent
