Wonderings

Post by fenerismoon »

This is just for those little... one might say, insignificant... little things you have always wondered about Atys

Example: A Zorai's mask, assuming they are born with it and it is not grafted on at birth. Is the mask hard like a shell?

If so... does it protect the Zorai's face in anyway, and how are they able to eat through such a small slit for a mouth hole.

If not... does it allow the Zorai to open and close the eye and mouth holes, and what is it?

Press the > button on the character creation screen for a Zorai and watch the animations that play. You'll see that Zorai can flex the orifices of their masks quite extensively (example).

The masks are grafted on in a special ceremony at the age of about 6 or 7, if I remember correctly.

Edit: *LOL* As always, Katriell was faster XD

Ah, and before you ask:
YES, we all would LOVE to see facial movement InGame, but as far as we know the current code does not allow for it and the animations on character creation are something apart from that, done in another code. *sigh*

Now... what about the lights the Zorai use? Are they magical, or are they electrical? ((The Zorai are masters of electricity and magnitism after all))

You're thinking too much inside the boxes. The Zoraï have no technology as we know it, no power generators and copper wiring. To them, electrical is magical. :D

Good point... thought about that... and thought they might use salt crystals as conductors, and generate the electricity magically, or through stored up charges from lighting strikes.

True, but my point goes a bit deeper than that. :) Lightning is... a force of nature, of Atys if you will. Magic, on Atys, is a force of nature as well. By using magic homins can manipulate other forces of nature. There are nonmagical means to that same effect too, as you say. So let's say the Zoraï discovered a piece of amber that had the power to amplify electricity. Would this effect be magical? The Zoraï might consider it as magical even if a human scientist might try to explain it based on the physical properties of the amber.

I've no doubt the levitating Zoraï thingies use electromagnetism to levitate, but do they use magic to supply the electromagnetism? Well, from our standpoint there's really no way to tell, as we don't know how it works. But from a Zoraï standpoint, it's magical by definition. The Zoraï could be using charges from lighting strikes stored in salt crystals like you say, and still consider it magical. So as far as anyone is concerned, electrical is magical on Atys.

That's how I see it anyways. :o

(Same as with that lightbulb with the insect inside, you could say it's obviously not magical since the insect clearly provides the light, but it's just as possible that insect uses magic to generate that light in the first place. :rolleyes :)

You raise a very good point... on what grounds to homins define what is magic and what is (for lack of a better term) physical phenomina.
