I wonder if the new owners would consider opening up the shard databases for read-only access? With some kind of API. That way, guilds could have websites and all their guild members could see each other's skill levels (particularly useful for crafting). Perhaps even our very own version of the WoW Armory?
I guess it would all have to be consensual on a player-by-player basis, or maybe even guild-by-guild, as I assume some people would want to keep their levels a secret.
We could have an up-to-date guild list of all guilds on each shard - which guilds own which OP - I guess the possibilities are enormous.
Basically I'm just putting this out there, and I wanted other people's opinions. I think it's highly unlikely we'd ever get this, but it would be nice, right? Or wrong?
I realise that WoW is all about DPS/Stats/Gear/Pwnage/l0lz0rz/11!!!oneone!/noob etc.. but I think this could be really helpful to a lot of guilds. Anyway, I'm eager to see what people think. Probably another stupid Nilly idea again!
Hugs,
- Nilly

Re: Read access to shard DB
Hmhm, many Guilds DO have Websites and some even have a kind of Database of their members. At least some I know.
On Leanon some peeps even keep constat track of OP ownership-status and such. Would save them a lot of work I guess
The idea isn´t bad at all.
Reminds me that I finaly have to update my Guild-Links section XD *headdesk*

Re: Read access to shard DB
It would be cool if people could tie in data from the Ryzom database to their websites however I think it should be optional.
(ie: Probably some kind of setting in-game for each individual character like 'Make player data public')

Re: Read access to shard DB
quite a few people maintain lists of OP status on aris, too.
It would be mildly cool, but to be honest there are things I would prefer them to spend their time on.
And of course, they would have to absolutely insane to give us direct access to their database. There isn't an enterprise level RDBMS in the world that hasn't had major unpatched vulnerabilites at some point or other - and many of the bigger ones (Oracle, looking at you here) are notoriously bad at patching them. Read-only access probably wouldn't stay read-only for long.

Ofcourse it would be some script on server side that does that database stuff and writes xml'ish files that users can download.

*nods* That was my thinking. I realise this is low priority stuff, hence not putting it on the centralised wishlist. Just wanted to gauge people's thoughts.blaah wrote:Ofcourse it would be some script on server side that does that database stuff and writes xml'ish files that users can download.

Re: Read access to shard DB
You can log in to the website and see most of your character stats, skills, etc.altilly wrote:How did they do it at EVE?
Also, there is a web service that can be used by 3rd party tools (notably EvEmon) to log in and acquire your current data.
You can't see another person's data, though.

Re: Read access to shard DB
Someone could just as well make a client-side script that uploads the stuff somewhere.
