I have been playing other mmorpgs for years now. I felt it was time to find a new game because im a little burnt out from the last one after playing for 4 years.
I am a 26 year old guy form New York who enjoys shopping, eating exotic foods, reading sci-fi and fantasy books and playing online games.
I tried Ryzom a few years ago when I had my laptop but just couldn't run it.
I now have a nice new computer and though I would give it a serious go.
I have a few questions about the game.
How is the population right now? I like to play games with a high populations, it makes things interesting.
I am a hard core pvper at heart. Wherever I go death and destruction lay in my wake.
Please don't get me wrong.. I won't go around killing new people. I like fair fights especially for a cause.
How does pvp work in Ryzom? what are rewards and consequences for winning or losing a pvp fight?
Now for my more carebearish side, I like to craft and trade.
Is there extremely rare items in Ryzon that can be found and traded.
Is there a huge player based economy?
Can I get to the point where I can go beyond others (with hard work of course) and get the skills to craft amazing gear?
How does character progression work, is there leveling? skill progression?
Is there a max level? how long would it take to get there if so?
What do most people do in the game? is there a huge amount of pvp? is it much more like a social game? or questing game?
Im looking forward to trying the game once its downloaded in about 1 hour.
hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
Re: hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
Welcome!
There's traditionally been a low population. Right now it's hard to tell as we're still restarting, but so far the population seems to be increasing rapidly.
For an explanation of all the different PvP types in Ryzom, see the first post in [thread=25244]this thread[/thread].
Almost everything in Ryzom is playercrafted so the economy is mostly playerbased. There are some extremely rare materials and crafting plans to be found.
Character progression is skill-based: Using a sword will get you XP in the sword skill, crafting axes will get you XP in the axe-crafting skill, etc etc. The max level for every skill is 250. This can take only a few days or several weeks to reach depending on the skill.
Once you get to level 250 in axe-crafting, gamemechanically you can't get any better anymore. Crafting better axes than everyone else who's level 250 axe-crafting, will then depend on the materials and the recipees you use.
It's a fairly social game, but there's also a fair amount of PvP if you look for it. Don't expect to find much questing though.
Hope you enjoy it.

Re: hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
Wow, that is a lot of questions. =)
The population right now is pretty high thanks to the recent influx of new players (for the Arispotle-English speaking server that is), however compared to a lot of other MMO's it's not that huge yet.
There are several types of PvP in Ryzom, for a quick summary I'd look here:
http://www.ryzom.com/en/features.html#pvp [Edit: or for more detail, the link in the post above]
Rewards are acquired from outposts which are fought over by guilds and their allies.
Personally I really love crafting in Ryzom, it's well tied in with both looted and dug materials for a complex, yet interesting system.
The game economy could be better but the player to player trading aspect is usually pretty decent at least. (Credit to the community)
There are rare materials in the form of supreme mats that require certain conditions or certain boss mobs to acquire.
This servers community is old enough to have it's veterains so there will always be several high level crafters but levels is only half the battle, if you can learn the better recipies you'll do well.
More and more skills or upgrades become available as you level, the max level is 250, however in some crafts there are branches that split meaning more levels to gain before you become a true master of that craft.
Most people spend their time dig/crafting or hunting with OP battles popping up randomly from time to time. Sometimes they'll be none for weeks then several in a short space of time.
Quests at this time are plentiful on the starter island and less so once you reach the mainland.
Good luck! Hope you enjoy your time on Atys.

I thought that takes months, and if you do whatever... more likely years

Re: hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
Yep, that's what I meant. I can't judge how often this player will log in, or how he will play, so all I can tell him is how long it would take if you grinded all day, and he can figure out from there how long it would take him.acridiel wrote:Ok, 24/7 Gameplay, maybe... Re: hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
i've always gone for the 6 months or more option, i keep messing about so much that i don't rly progress more than 5 levels per day, and 1 or 2 if i'm over the 200's xD

Re: hello, im new. Lots of questions and some info
*Drifts away to remember the old days of power gaming....
Now all i get from power gaming is sporadic uncontrollable muscle movements, grumpy mood and a belly from the fast food.
Apart from the fact that i can't be bothered to stay awake once i get tired.
I love to game but no virtual planet is as cosy as my bed when i am tired
I can only talk about Silan and shortly after. In any case, that will be what you see when you log on first.
Silan is nicely populated, it's not overcrowded but every spot has a few peeps and if you want to team up for the tougher stuff you will find one or more without problems.
Most has been answered but i want to emphasize the fact that all items are player crafted.
I have only seen a small part of the economy but so far i make more cash then i spend, which is all i need to know
If you are brand new you will spend the first days just figuring out how things work, advance to 30 or 40 and from to time say : "Ahh, so THATS how that works" or "Where is that bloody Stanza when you need it" ^^
Levels have been explained by previous poster and are probably the best part of it.
