Post by zythik »

Hi, I started a trial account on this game a while back but I didn't really play, people are coming back and saying they are glad it's opening again because it was the best MMO they played, is it that good? I might start playing onse it's fully opend again but i was wondering whats the key features that make this game better than the others?

Yes, there are player apartments. Only the player with the apartment can go in,though. There is storage in it for items and it just looks cool :)

There are guild houses too. Any member of that guild can go in.

The crafting is out of this world and I've only just scratched the surface of it. I can spend hours just digging and watching the animals around me. But I'm still quite new to the game myself.

For me, what makes this the best game is the community and the whole "feel" you get. It's not quest based so if you need to be lead around and told what to do, then maybe it's not for you. But if you have patience and are willing to learn and be part of a community, then there isn't a better place to be.

I like the housing it sounds cool, but when you say it's not quest based, does that mean its just grind?

- Explore and observe. Ryzom has diverse locales, five different ecosystems including the eerie underground Prime Roots, many details, spectacular environmental effects, and none of that bland terrain-generator land you find in some other games.

The animals behave realistically, with migrations, packing/herding, carnivores hunting herbivores, some animals defending each other depending on species, etc. Non-aggressive animals graze or sleep, and when a player is near they eye them from a safe distance, or come up to them and even follow them for a short time. The Yubo, which is like a rodent or a small dog, will beg at you or pee on your shoe.

There are seasons, weather, and a day/night cycle. All of these affect what crafting materials can be harvested where, as well as the locations of animals.

There are no stealth mechanics, so navigating Atys is a challenge which can be taken on solo for thrills, or in group. Sometimes trekking groups are quite large, spanning multiple teams and traveling between all four capital cities.

- Participate in events. A couple years ago, Ryzom had many live events which contributed to the ongoing storyline of Atys in various ways and on varying scale. Some were tiny events in which some mysterious NPC passed through, some were festive activities like fashion shows, some revealed fragments of Atys's past and present or hinted at things to come, and some were massive invasions such as this and this. There was once an election to replace the Tryker governor Still Wyler (NPC) who was assassinated in an earlier event. The outcome of that election differed between servers, as did the outcomes of some other events.

Instead of each player doing static quests wherein they save someone or retrieve something and get handsomely praised and rewarded while in fact their actions were utterly meaningless, players in Ryzom participated in events en masse and received+created unique, influential experiences.

We don't know if the new owner will resume events, but it can be hoped that they will.

- Experiment. With the stanza system, you can customise your attacks and other actions. With the deep harvesting and crafting systems, you can optimise your material gathering and discover better crafting recipes. In these three areas, as well as others (i.e. finding good trekking routes in each region for each season), experimentation is key, and it can be very fun.

What I've listed is not all you can do. I've merely described some things I've found particularly enjoyable, and welcome others to do the same or elaborate further on these.

If by "grind" you mean the WoW type of grinding just to level up, it's not the same type of game so grinding doesn't have the same meaning or feel to it.

Everyone can heal or be a fighter or a caster but to get better at it, you have to practice and use your abilities. To improve at healing, you need someone to heal so you go out in groups and heal someone who is working on their fighting or casting abilities. To improve at using a sword, you have to go out and use that sword and level up that ability, and it helps to have someone along that can heal you and restore your stamina.

When my husband wants to level up his magic, I go out with him, we work our way through the Grove of Umbra to the brains and while he uses his spells to kill the brains, I'll toss him heals and restore his sap. I'll quarter the kills and loot the spoils while we are chatting or listening to music. Sometimes guild mates will join us and we'll all work together.

It's definitely a slower paced feel and a more relaxing game to play.

This seems like the kind of game that you'd want to get a good friendly active guild with. :3 I played Ryzom on the trial a long while ago...and...yeah, I really liked the ambience and style of the game, though it seems like it'd be a lot more enjoyable with a guild to go with. XD Here's hoping, I guess.

And also, I can't wait for Ryzom to be open for everyone D:

Yeah, I am totally siked as well for it to be back open to everyone. I think you will really enjoy what you find if you take the time to explore the starter island (quest based just to get you going and familiar), and then find an active guild and head to the mainland. It's a bit overwhelming when you first arrive there because you ask yourself, "what do I do now?" The correct question is, "what do you want to do?" A good active guild will be able to help you with that as you start on your adventures. Best of luck.
