Ryzom is not for stupid people

Post by axone »

After a couple of days of trial play, I realized that Ryzom is a very intricate game designed for mature players with a certain level of IQ. (No offense if there is any stupid among us)
There are no big yellow exclamation marks on top of quest givers, and no color-coding or skull-icons for monsters that are hostile or way higher in level than you. I don't even want to mention this game's crafting/mining details as compared to "Market-Leading MMORPG" (Let's call it MLM) Unfortunately, this is exactly the reason why it was not as successful as MLM. You need to be very attentive in this game and spent a considerable time to figure out for example how the hell I am going to combine "search for fine materials" and "50m prospecting" with only a limited credit available. Which fence is she (the quest giver) talking about? "Wooden fence" or "the electrical fence"? Just like in real life, things are not presented as a ready-to-swallow pills, you need to work for them (Although, after a hard day of work in RL, some people may not like the extra challenge in VL). There are also things which were beyond the capacity of my average brain. I can't, for example, benefit from the in-game compass, (those who have jet pilot licence may not have difficulty though). You have to actually "pay attention" to what the quest giver is saying. You can't behave like "Oh! Cut the lore crap! Tell me how many "sucker" Yubos I need to kill"
I should praise the game designers for a very original and clever game but I should admit it sucks like hell to see that there are only a handful of players around in a game categorized as "Massively Multiplayer"

If you mean, bankrupcy news, "servers are closing in 3 weeks" news. Yes, I've read them all. My opinion is that, if this game would be designed for all ages and IQ levels (including new born babies who can click a mouse) and if this game would be an instant massive hit (like that of Blizzard's) those companies would now be thinking how many dozens of new servers are necessary to reduce server lag and how many new employees they will need to "count the money" they are getting from ever-increasing number of subscribers :)

meanwhile myself and a majority of current players would leave. this would be no problem for the new owners in such a case - but i guarantee you this - i would NOT hang around - and the newer players will be stuck starting mostly from scratch (we have a way of "getting rid" of most players like you described above.. even without meaning to - they just don't understand/hang around!)

if the game was changed to suit players like that - it would no longer be ryzom. i'd rather see the game die.

as for the 'not enough people' issue - thats because of the status of the servers. when we weren't in fear of our lives that the sky would fall on our heads - plenty played so that no one really complained about playerbase (unless they just came over from an "MLM" )

pff, "stupid people" play ryzom too - it just takes some learning and getting used to. "immature people" don't play ryzom (okay okay i can name a dozen or so... :p ). there's a huge difference - trust me :D (i've had "stupid people" friends that absolutely rocked!)

You'll get to love the compass eventually, don't worry. It's a very versatile tool.

For one, you can change the resolution - there are several degrees, from 25 to 250 meters around you. So you can watch the dots in your immediate vicinity (25), or in your spell attack range (50), or in bigger distance. Color coding tells you whether they are dead or alive, a NPC, a beast, a homin or a dig node (you can set the individual colours if you have trouble recognizing those preset).

For two, you can use it to determine the safe way around. Set it to 25 and try to keep all the beast dots as far as you can from the center.

For three, you can use it to navigate yourself around the preset targets. Try right-clicking and look for "land marks" or "target".

For four, you can use it to search for dead people when trying to revive someone; or to search for live people who might want your company.

And I'm sure that the mainland veterans could suggest 101 more ways to use the compass. :-)

Zelee, you convinced me that I should give a second chance to that compass. Thank you very much for the tips, they were very useful!

Regarding the Ryzom, we can’t expect a massively multiplayer game to be financially successful, if it is not designed to attract massive masses. The idea behind this game is very original if not revolutionary, but its “starting difficulty level” needs to be toned down a bit so that more people can enjoy the game at first trial. (more people--> more money --> running game)
Of course this will come with a price (see below) but life is full of compromises!

“133t n00b Killa” has just stabbed you in the back while you were harvesting that node!

I know that guy...He killed me at the stables when I was crafting :/

Funny thing, all those things that you mentioned that make Ryzom not profitable (and the things that make MLM a huge success) are the things that keep me from really going anywhere else. Do I log in as much as I should? No...But that doesn't change the fact that I'm a spoiled brat because of this game, and everything else has to be at least 1/2 as good for me to even make it past level 3 ;)

Welcome to our beautiful world :D

Oo dammit my real identity has been uncovered

stupid people can play this game btw, they just avoid all of the stuff that actually means they have to think. they then grind plants/plants/plants/plants/najab/kincher/jugs then they leave :)

realy stupid people (like me) grind plants/plants/plants/plants/najab/kincher/jugs then stay and do it again for another skill :D

the clever ones spend all their life digging and dreaming of building a realtime craft simulator so they can work out how to get 1 extra percent on a staff over ****'s recipe

And you DO realize that if thies came to pass, it would no longer be this Game, but a MLM Clone. With people going, hey this is just like MLM, why the hell did I even try this?

If this Game would be designed for all IQ levels, as you say it, then those with a higher IQ would leave and leave behind the babys to babble on about RoXXoR 1337 Stuff.

Bybebye Ryzom, byebye friendly players (mostly)
and welcome World of Wannabe MMORPG.
