Mmorpg.com promotion (yes all over again I know...)

Post by ghostkpt »

//OOC:
Greetings everybody.

i wanted to return to the topic of MMORPG.COM and it's influence on games and their audiences.

Well everybody knows how large is the MMORPG.com audience and what impact that webpage has on the games...
I just want to address a few topics here.

1. Appearance of the "Ryzom" section

Look at it guys. http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setV ... /gameID/36 The picture is kind of weird really... what does it show? Looks as though the screenie was taken when the person was looking at the ground... Surely it is possible to substitute it with something more interesting! If the devs or the Gameforge promotion fellas have no time for it maybe we should run a player contest and let the players come up with the best variant of that banner. After all that picture is the first thing new players are looking at.

2. Banners and advertisements

Well it just seems strange that games like "Zu online" or the "Sword of the new world" that must not even be compared with SoR can afford these banners and SoR can not... Maybe at least 1 maybe for at least a couple of weeks to test the player response? What does everyone think?

3. Devchats and interviews

It never hurts to face the gamers and tell them about new stuff as well as stuff that's already out there and they just haven't heard about... Oldies like Lineage II do it, weird free games like Dungeon Runners do it and we don't... I personally think that it could have been a really nice interest booster for SoR...

4. Player Comments

There are those devoted players (like Tyilin and Katriell) who frequent the MMORPG.com Sor forum section and answer the peoples questions while pushing a little advertisement for our beloved game here and there. I have a great thank you in store for them :) But guys please do not forget about the comments that appear right under the game title on the SoR page. Those that you type in the little window below your review. Those ones will be the first thing a newcomer sees and we all gotta do our best to ensure those are nothing but positive.

5. Hall-of-fame

For the past couple of months Ryzom has been just out of reach of the hall-of-famers. Only one little push is all that is needed. Just a couple positive reviews (by positive I mean all 10s with one 9 maybe) and even a couple negative for the hall of famers just above us (all 1s with one 2 :cool :) is all that is needed.
And once our beloved game hits the hall of fame there is bound to be an influx of players some of which might just be the right atysian community material :)

People of Atys, I urge you to go to MMORPG .com, register a free account if you don't have one yet, make a few posts on forums to reach lvl5 necessary for making reviews and rate our beloved game so that it soars up to the hall of fame.
And don't forget about that banner either :P

And then there will be eternal joy and happiness! :D
I welcome everyone to share ideas in this topic.

1. Yes that picture is dreadful, my 2 year old child could do better, its a disgrace.

2. I dont know Zu, but SotNW is a new game and as such has a nice juicy fresh marketing budget, Ryzom on release had alot of coverage with advertisements, I remember waiting months for its release, due to advertisements I had seen in PC Gamer.

3. While Lineage 2 may be "old", it is an excellent game, with a HUGE player base, probably second to WoW if I was to hazard a guess. It keeps itself renewed with new episodes called Chronicles, so when these get wheeled out, the marketing kicks into gear. Dungeon Runners again is working from a fresh marketing budget.

I think Ryzoms biggest problems, stem from its initial reviews, scoring quite surprisingly low scores. With that and peoples first impressions on the starter island, it was going to be an uphill battle. Although 2 magazines revisited the game and scored it again, its score was still only marginally better.

I remember trying to recruit some people for my guild back then, but they were just killing time for WoW to arrive, which IMO, really sealed Ryzoms fate.

There are an incredible number of "free" MMO's on the market, which also soak up possible Ryzom players, some of them are quite excellent games in their own right....and they are free. It could be an avenue that Ryzom could take, if it doesn't start turning a profit, whereby players have no monthly subscription, but instead purchase additional content ( eg. buffs, temperory armour and weapon accoutrements etc).

Just looking at the subscription on the page, 14.95, with no currency denomination would also scare some people off, when they can get pretty good games for free with no monthly subscriptions.

With regard to making an impact with a review on the site, you need to have a certain score determined by number of posts/quality of the posts, login frequency etc. Which kind of sucketh.

The post is a great idea though, well done :)

it is actually -
login frequency: 2 days
Number of posts: 6 posts
Length of posts: at least 50 characters.

Not all THAT hard imho ;)

Well maybe that was because noone actually bothered to explain what that banner was intended for... If it all has a purpose then I myself would look at it differently and rush to participate. But if it's just: hey everybody make me some banners! then I'd say - why should I?

But of course honestly speaking it's the Gameforge design team's job to come up with those banners...

Couldnt agree with you more. The picture is weird. As far as i know, its been the picture since jena-knows! I would love to see a new picture there, but have no idea how to go about getting the current one changed! *sigh*

2. Banners and advertisements

Well it just seems strange that games like "Zu online" or the "Sword of the new world" that must not even be compared with SoR can afford these banners and SoR can not... Maybe at least 1 maybe for at least a couple of weeks to test the player response? What does everyone think?

There was a time, maybe a two week period where Ryzom was on mmorpg.com, was a really nice banner. I think it was Ring based tho. However, im sure the Guys from GF :P aris still have them lurking. My only problem would be that GF :P aris should get the game to a position where 'everything works' (or at least working as well as they need it to be) I would rather see resources go into finishing patches to start off with.

I'd love to see an actual DEV chat (someone other than Yogin/Vince/Marjo would be awesome) but i'm guessing the DEV team are french, so seeing an english chat is ot very likely.

Thanks, Ryzom does need to support. there're several people who do talk about ryzom, just not enough. If you compare the amount of votes we have with bigger games (EVE / WoW) it's a tiny amount. I;m sure there's lots of Ryzom Players who havent voted on MMORPG.com

5. Hall-of-fame

Don't put all 10's! (or all 1's for other games) lol you vote wont be counted ;) Vote honestly. If you;ve been playing Ryzom for 2 years then obviously you'll vote high. If you've not been playing long but love the game, you'll still vote high. Ryzom had been in the top 8 for a long long time. didn't seem to affect it too much tho. However, i think once a few more missions appear and some refining occurs being in the top 8 would make a vast diference

Sorry didn't know that, this is the info it showed me, sorry for the misunderstanding :

Ranks are calculated every day at 2:00AM EST.  They are only based on the last 30 days of data

We look at the following factors when determining your rank:

How many days you visited the site (and logged in).

This is also counted when you use our "autologin" feature.

How much information you have posted in our forums (not the amount of posts)

The quality of your posts. If you post lot of "filler" posts that only consist of a few words this will cost you rank points.

Any posts of yours that had to be deleted will cost you 5 rank points (there are only 100 total)
To prevent your posts from being deleted, please obey our ....bla blah
