NO keyboard response in game. Edited last post(6-28-07)

Post by ladyfae »

Ive just downloaded and installed and run the big patcher thing yesterday. THe first time I played the game yesterday everything was fine. A little laggy here and there but thats normal in online games(Ive played them before). Keyboard and mouse were working fine. I was able to kill things move around everything.

I shut down my game when I went out. Later that night I went to play it again. After logging in with my pass and loading the game to the game screen, my keyboard seemed not to work. Nothing responded to any keyboard inputs. No movement no letter keys nothing. As if my keyboard did not exist. After a few minutes of clicking around, my mouse cursor disappeared too. Nothing got it back. I would be sitting there watching the back of my character just looking around.

I was forced to hard shut it down via the task manager. So I restarted the game again. This time I was able to kill a few thing with my mouse before it up and disappeared. Keyboard still did not work.

I tried this a few more times with the same results. Im clueless as to why this happened. THe first time I played the game(for over an hour too) everything worked good. Only upon a relaunch did I start having these problems.

Additionally now once I alt-tab to bring up my browser it seems to make the game not respond. I cant get the game to come back up when I click it in the task bar. Again as before the first time I ran and played the game I was able to alt-tab quite a few times without any problems at all.

Ive made sure my Avast was off and stuff like that. Only firewall that may be on is the standard one that is with windows etc.. But Ive never had problems with it before.

Info that may be helpful:

Windows XP
Graphic card - Nvidia GEForce FX 5200 Ultra (Driver version 7.1.8.4)
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1300 MHz
512MB RAM
Running on DSL (Westell Dual Connect Modem)
Direct X 9+ (not exactly sure which version but I keep it current)

Its probably not the most ideal specs but Ive run games and online games on here too.

Sounds like a client side issue, and my first thought when seeing your specs is that 512MB is low even for Windows XP, never mind running anything else, but that's what I started out with very well myself. Look into raising your RAM by a 1GB and I'm sure you'll notice a difference, but I don't honestly expect that is the real issue.

Just a suggestion : try making a fresh administrator account in Windows, login to it and run Ryzom there. (MacOSX troubleshooting trick - bypasses user account preferences.)

Then try asking for help on Klients.

Something else just to try:

When the background patcher pops up just after launching the game, try bringing focus back (Click on) to the main game window.

Had a similar problem, basically was alt-tabbing back and forth to chat on steam. and after the last alt-tab back in game mouse worked fine but no responce from keyboard ingame whatsoever. pressing alt-tab once solved it (for some reason game didnt recognise that i properly got back in.
Just my 2 cents not sure if it helps or not since you say system freezes after you alt-tab.

Yeah making sure I clicked on the main window when that small installer popped back up did the trick. You woulda thought maximizing the window and and clicking ingame would "got me back in" but yeah. CLicking in it during startup worked at least this time lol.

I just closed it down and ill try it again when I play next time. Seemed such a simple solution, makes me feel kinda stupid for posting about it.

Anyway, Cheers guys!

Well I had problems again. After shutting it down, played for a few hours. I went to start it up again. Same problem with the keyboard. So I had to shut it down the hard way yet again. Then I started it again, this time made a new character.. Obviously I had to type a name. That went smoothly but as soon as it was in game, again no keyboard and mouse disappeared shortly after. I did nothing but click on the screen a few times to make sure it was on to the game between the time of character creation and the time the game loaded.

But then I tried rebooting my comp after shutting the game down for a second time. I rebboted, opened up my firefox(as I always do), then started the game and my keyboard works... *shrugs* It seems to work after a fresh reboot.

I dunno why it does that, seem such a small thing as not letting the keyboard and mouse(after a while) work when everything else looks fine starting up the game.

I'm alt-tabbed out of the game at the moment. Also the only time it does freeze ryzom when alt tabbing, is when the keyboard and mouse arent working in game. Otherwise the alt-tabbing works as it should.
-----------

ETA: Im not understanding why sometimes its registering my keyboard and mouse and other times its not, which when it does my mouse thn goes bye bye.
Yesterday(day before yesterday) I left my game on over night. Because there was a server check during that time I had to close it down when I woke up. SO I started it back up fine. Clicked a few times on the main screen and no problems with my keyboard.

So this morning I had done the same. I wanted to close it down because I wasnt sure if my sub started or if I would need to restart the game for it to effect it. Close it down. REstart.. keyboard troubles... soooo I did a restart on my comp. Which normally has no problems with the keyboard. But this time it did on fresh reboot of the comp. Even though I clicked several times on my screen.

Im at a loss as to what is causing this randomosity. THe only time the game stops responding is when the board doesnt work. At first I figured it might be, because I have a wireless keyboard and the batteries might need replacing.. but alas everything else is fine with it. My wireless receiver is only about a foot and a half away from my keyboard too...

I know my RAM is sorta on the low end. But Ive never run across this problem with any other game/application. I would think if it was from my RAM other things might not work so well or load up either. Ive played everal game that are full screen mode(sims2, maple story and other games) as well and never a problem with them.

I just got a sub last night which says it will be active sometime today. but if this problem keeps persisting I dont know... Its just really frustrating...

Greetings!
Some thoughts that might help:
  • Does your keyboard require any special drivers? If so you might consider reinstalling/updating them.
  • Have you tried running the client background downloader (client_background_downloader_rd.exe) in the \ryzom folder in repair mode?
Some other ideas that may help include:
  • Swapping the keyboard with a spare (if you have one)
  • Swapping the usb to PS/2 adapter with another one (if you are using a usb keyboard in a PS/2 port)
  • Changing usb ports (if you are using a usb keyboard)
If you have a USB 2.0 spec device please check to see that you are running it off a USB 2.0 port. Using a USB 1.0 port or attaching a USB1.0 spec USB hub to a 2.0 port then using a USB2.0 device will cause issues.

Had a similar (or exactly the same) issue.
at first, having a text document open that I could alt-tab to and type random stuff in, then alt-tab back to ryzom seemed to fix it.
But more recently that failed to work (grrrr patches), and alt-tabbing just locked up everything. So I then killed ryzom using task manager (very slow), and rebooted/restarted ryzom. If it happened again, restart again.

A few weeks back I upgraded from 512 meg to 1 gig RAM, and the problem plus a few others hasnt occured since.

Ryzom does have higher requirements than many other games.

How would I check if devices are USB 1 or 2? I do have a USB hub which some things are plugged into. Id have to look to see if my keyboard is plugged into that. (I have it because some things arent long enough to reach to the back of my computer from the desktop and the fact I have more things than slots on the back of my comp)

Ill check my keyboard drivers and stuff. unfortunatly no spare keyboard. Though this is the first time Ive ever had issues with my keyboard....lol

Go to System Control Panel > Hardware > Device Manager and check the properties for each of your Universal Serial Bus controllers. Devices should appear there and also under their own section. A USB2 device plugged into a USB1 socket may still show itself as only capable of USB1.

In general, I wouldn't recommend connecting keyboard or mouse via a hub, just because they're critical for your own control of your computer.
