So I decided to try this game. I killed a bunch of furry little critters for a while. Then I made some shoes that were worse than I already had (I think). I didn't see any weapon shops.
I did this for about an hour or two and really was kind of bored.
What am I missing here? I want to like this game, but I'm a bit lost at what to do. Do I keep slashing stuff with my knife until I can do something else?
So what is the point of this game?
Re: So what is the point of this game?
I don't think there is a single, ultimate point. There are many things one can do other than what you've done so far. There is no end-game; the best things can be done at any level. A good example might be improving your crafting: the most important part of crafting is understanding which materials, which combinations of materials, produce the best stats in the resultant item. Just by perusing the materials available on the Raw Materials Merchant in the starting island, noting the stats in various materials' Info windows, you can make significant progress in this concept. I'll give you a hint: bodoc skins, used as the Clothes component of light armor (i.e. those shoes you mentioned), provide good Protection Factor. But the "Max vs." stats on armor are also important, so don't neglect to use materials that benefit those as well.
Some other activities: exploring, roleplaying, attending/following events/storyline (both official and player-run), joining a guild and doing things with them, helping fellow players, learning the best ways to use skills rather than simply rushing through levels, etc...

Re: So what is the point of this game?
The same as any other game, to have some fun. This is a sandbox game; you've a world to play in and get on with pretty much anything you like that the mechanics will allow.
Read some of the lore and go and meet the ranger npcs around the ranger camp and listen to what they have to tell you. The starter island Silan has several lines of missions you can follow, mostly to lead you through the basic skills but also to introduce you to some of the game lore. Don't forget that this is a multi-player game, talk to people, team up with them, ask for help and give somebody else your own.
The weapons merchants, by the way, are standing by the fyrosian warrior task-giver, Guilan Agutter (sp?), and the the melee trainer, north side of the camp.

Where is Acridiel's famous post for new players again ? *Searching for Acridiel's signature* Ah ! Found it !
Please, have a look at this post. I think it really sums it up.
The great point of this game is that you can do and be whatever you want. There is no stereotypical class. You can train and specialize in whatever you want. And you're not even restrained to only one speciality. You can have two, or three, or five, or whathever you like doing the most. You are the master of your character's destiny, you make it become what you want it to be by the action and exploits you make him accomplish through playing the game.
Some MMORPG fail on the RP part : this one doesn't.
And I'm looking forward to meet those RPers ingame when I reach the mainland.
