New As Well

Post by lysidia »

Hello All! I am currently playing World of Warcraft, and steadily getting bored with it. The same old stuff over and over and I am looking for a change. The servers went down this morning for the usual updates and fixes so I found myself searching the web for something to do on Tuesdays and came across this cute little game called Ryzom. I got my free trial deal going and it's downloading now so I decided to scope out the forums.

In reading some posts, I see that there are some pretty mature and extremely nice people and feel this may make a change in my spare time, instead of running around in WoW doing basically nothing and getting nowhere fast. WoW IS fun and I love my friends there, but like I said, I'm getting bored. I'm such a social butterfly, I'm ready and willing to make new friends, as much as a girl can ;)

I was wondering how big of a difference Ryzom is from WoW as in graphics, factions, and PvP (question for those who have played WoW)? Also, are there any suggestions on what a good starting race/class is? I want to start this new game out right and learn all I can before I go on to a more advance aspect of Ryzom (being that there is one)?

Finally, I'd love a server recommendation. One filled with lots of new friends for me to meet and grow to love!!!

-Most loving Regards-

Graphicswise, WoW and Ryzom can't really be compared... WoW is cartoony style, and Ryzom is more overtly "smooth" (turn up Ryzom gfx to full and I don't see how anyone could not love it)
For the Factions, Ryzom is basically a game of two opposing sides, with people in the middle who either follow neither or both or some other mixture... Factions are pretty much the only contentious issue in the game and you will be able to see a lot of "heated discussions" in the General forums on the subject.
PvP in Ryzom is completely different to that in WoW or GW... for me, its more of a "group dynamic" where its the group as a whole that makes the difference, its not so much teamwork as working as one big entity... the whole preparation and alliancebuilding is more than half the battle.

The simple answer is pick what you like the look and sound of; there's basically no concrete unchangeable difference between races except looks, and there's no classes at all. Ryzom is a skill-based game where you can learn everything and anything given enough time and effort :) Check out the stickies in this forum for more info, especially this one for race/faction info, and this one for lots of links.

Considering you posted in English, pick Arispotle. The Cho server is being merged into Aris to make way for a new Portuguese server on Wednesday (see here) and the other two servers are French or German speaking ;)

Welcome to Ryzom and Atys then. :)

If you need graphics look ant my "Movies" site below to find almost all of what there is on Videos and the like.

But let me issue a word of fair warning here.
Comming from WoW you will surely meet some obstacles that you are not used to.
Remind yourself that it is a completely different system and game as often as you can and do not fall into the trap to expect it to have all the same little "conveniences" that WoW has. Ryzom takes longer to grasp in its full flavor and longer to master to boot. ;)
You may find a good discussion of those things in my "Drear Newbes" Link.

Ryzom is not WoW and will hopefully never become a WoW-Clone.
It´s unique, it´s small, it´s a bit slow on the DEV side, but it´s a fantastic game, wich you will hopefully come to love as well as we do. :)

First off, Welcome! Always happy to see someone "graduate" to Ryzom from another game. :)

Your freetrial area (Silan) is mission-based to help better teach you the way things operate ingame and on the mainland. Pay close attention to the mission givers, it helps alot. However, you can leave missions behind when and if you decide to subscribe and come to the mainland. Missions here are Fame based with only fame points and a few dappers as rewards.
You will quickly reach the level cap of 21 in all 4 skills on Silan and then its time to figure out if this is a game for you. Subscribe or don't subscribe.

If you do, stay on Silan until your at least in your lvl 30 skill range in one of your skills. Trust me it helps alot before the mainland.
Any other stuff we're here to help, advise and further confuse you :)

All the best!
