The woes of the new patching system

Earlier today, I got a PWOD (please wait of death) for quite a while, which lead to FS lost, therefore I restarted the application. Unfortunately, I never returned to the game but instead the automatic patcher was stuck in a loop, starting and shutting itself down. After killing the background patcher's process, I tried to start the game again but to no avail.
I was advised through klients to do the BackgroundDownloader = 0; workaround, which unfortunately didn't work either. I also tried to do ipconfig /dnsflush which also didn't help at all.
After that, I was advised to uninstall, re-download the game (I used the link at http://dl2.gfsrv.net/ryzom-installer_060928.exe) and re-install. Now the game seems to get stuck doing the first file check and after five minutes it crashes, giving a windows memory allocation error 'The instruction at "0x0096cc99" referenced memory at "0xfffffff0". The memory could not be read.'
Any thoughts on this?
