Hello, new player from UK

Post by nessk »

Hi,

I started my adventures in Ryzom recently, I've played mmporgs before and have been looking for something I could play casually where I could craft and buy and sell items via a shop or marketplace. So far it looks as if this game may fulfill those wishes.

Heres what I'm thinking or am finding confusing after playing for a few hours, sanity checks appreciated!

1 I think I will restart on Cho what with it being a newer server, always easier to make an impact on a less mature marketplace. Will I encounter other players in my timezone?

2 I have read up on factions but am very confused, its one of those things that you have to experience to understand I think. Would my race choice limit me later in the game? The first character I made is Matis and I'm happy with that from a purely aesthetic perspective.

3 I did the second crafting quest, the 5 boots and 5 trousers with HP one. The quest progressed to where the journal window recognised that I had made the items and then asked me to sell them to the light armour merchant - this was despite the fact that I didnt think I'd made enough trousers. I sold the items I did have to the armour merchant but the quest doesn't complete and the quest giver won't respond. I tried making the items I thought I might have missed and sold them but it's still stuck. What did I do wrong and how do I avoid it with another character?

4 Prospecting, this gets easier or quicker, right? I noticed that you can prospect for materials that make specific items such as clothing. Is this as specific as you can get or is that the quests in the starting island ask for specific items and you don't need to be so specific when you're out crafting in the full game?

Thanks for any insights, I've been impressed at the helpfulness of the community in game so far.

Hi Nessk!

It is definitly easier to make an impact on Cho. You will notice there is less players there then Aripostle but I do see players around and I'm the same timezone as you. Also if you go to the mainland and are looking for help traveling around to get access to teleports Beefy is a player that likes helping people with that on Cho.

There are no pernament limits from race, being a Matis just means you would have it easier joining the Karavan faction and would have to work harder to join the Kami but can still join either.

This thread by Sprite helped explain faction and fame to me when I started, worth the look if you haven't read it.

I'd swear I've had similer problems with that quest. The best I could sujest is making sure to keep all the pants and boots you've crafted for the first part and sell them in a group to the merchant. Oh and also make sure you don't acidently sell to players, if you do they are on the merchant for five days before selling if no players buys them earlier. You can retired them from the 'yuor sale' tabs on the merchant though.

When I have gotten stuck like that making more and selling them did get me past it.

You start extracting more per stack as you get better at harvesting. As well as other benefits like getting more then one node per prospect and being able to tell what type of resource they are as a name floating over the node.

The starting island quests ask for specific items, your able to use any mat that is the general type the receipe needs (lining, armor jacket, blade, etc) but the stats of the item you make change depending on the stats of the materials used.

It's a nice complex crafting system, which makes it hard to explain quickly in a post. You'll get the hang of it as you work with it though.

EDIT: Also it's worth noting that the starting island is much more quest based then the mainland. It was designed that way to work as a tutorial to the game but unfortunitly it does give the impression Ryzom is more quest based on the mainland then it really is.

Thanks for the advice and reassurance that harvesting gets less frustrating. I made a character on Cho last night and made sure I did the crafting #2 quest in one session and it completed with no problems this time.

For me the harvesting quests on the starting island were incredibley frustrating. Tracking just did my head in without some increased prospecting angle, range and number of nodes to look around the area's it leads too. Also I found it much more enjoyible when I got to the mainland and was seting my own goals for materials that I needed for crafting. Harvesting is actuely my highest skill now.

Also http://ryzom.raum.com/ has a great map (mainland only) feature that you can set to shows some of the spots where materials are and can nicely cut down time if your looking for something specific.

Actually, I don't think Ryzom will fulfill those wishes, or not in the way you might expect, at least. Play casually, certainly, but the tradeskill and merchant system here is, I believe, entirely unlike anywhere else. The currency, dappers, are very valuable to newcomers, but before the time that a crafter/forager reaches level 100, they need never be short of change again. Which is probably where the trader system ingame breaks down as a marketplace, along with the fact that goods in the shop window have a shelf life of only 2 weeks.

Crafting for players is typically done to order, and the currency then is usually the mat - thousands of grind mats, or handfuls of rare supremes, for example. A crafter will make hundreds upon thousands of items to gain experience, and the npc traders will happily pay for every one. With the possible exceptions of ammunition (consumable) and jewellery (the stat boost is related only to the item level not its overall quality) though, players won't want any of these items which you make for your own experience. They will want your best work, made to order and made from excellent and supreme materials, which you save up for these commissions. You generally won't want to make anything with your best materials to display in the shop window because of the two week shelf-life, but having an Excellent graded piece for display with one or two notable attributes can be good advertising.

Welcome to Ryzom :)
