Starting Out

Post by teesh »

I've been mostly toying with the character creator, now I am ready to actually play. Is there a -best- way to choose your starting package?

on the medium, long term, none will make a difference.

when makin alts, i always take the craft package. so i have more mats at the begining to do the crafter quests, so i can make myself a nice armor and then start to play seriously.
but well, its a matter of taste, taking a package, is mainly just taking 1-2 skills you will buy later anyway.

It's one small step in the direction of one of the 4 skill branches, won't take long to change direction if you so decide later.

You aren't locking yourself into a role, if that is your concern. Pick whichever one you want to explore first if you like, but know that you can do any or all of these areas to varying degrees as suits you. See the starting guide linked in my sig.

It's really a pretty minor point, but ...

... I think recommending that newcomers take the craft package is generally poor advice and I don't want it to go uncontested.

Forage is the slowest and most boring skill to get started on, but eventually it proves to be the most deep and well thought through skill, certainly the most rewarding in dappers, and all but essential to anyone pursuing a craft. For that slow start I will always recommend people to take the forager package and get a boost. Many player crafted items are readily available from Silan merchants, of far better quality than can be made using the generic crafter mats, and players will very often make stuff for free when asked, delighted to know that what they make will actually help someone out!

Why would you get a crafting and forage package if you don't intend to craft or forage in the least bit of concern? I don't think there is a pack that you should 'always' get. Yes, craft and forage packs are very helpful to most who start these branches, but I actually prefer magic, since I don't craft or forage in the least. The magic pack saves you points from nearly every skill you can buy and with level limit (though it was removed) you need all the points you can get.

the boost for any of them is a small boost in the long term. Which one you pick isn't going to matter a lot.
