The holy trinity. Graphics, content, mechanics. Ryzom gets 2 out of 3: beautiful graphics, awesome detail, immersive. Stellar mechanics: custom-built abilities, a skill-based system, fluid combat, great depth. Content: *snore* I can do nearly identical quests from multiple quest-givers (map markers may or may not be included, fun), grind mobs for levels (eq2 anyone?) or PvP (this is cool, but how much grinding till my toon is competitive?).
I know I'll get flamed by the fanboys, or locked by the mods, but it matters not. I've already unsubscribed, and I now know why this obscure game, which I just thought had lousy marketing, has only enough population to support 4 servers. Beyond the noob island, there's a smattering of universal chat (heavily moderated because the general chat is "q&a only." makes no sense) and a big empty world with next to zero player base it seems.
Other Games may have issues with leet kiddies seeking teh phat lootz, but at least theres a throng of people to get things done, or make things interesting. I'd rather deal with a few angry nerd teens than live with a shrunken "mature player base" of what seems less than 10k.
Great potential, but it falls prey to the same old MMO paradigm. Perhaps in another couple of years, we will see MMOs that break this mold. I thought it might be Ryzom, even if it was different by small degrees, but not so imo.
Good luck out there, and play the games *you* think are fun; ignore my babble if it seems such to you. I simply felt compelled to give my critique. Take care all.

Re: So Much Potential
heh , I love it when someone calls someone else a "fanboy"... It has cracked me up since I first started playing MMOs not so long ago
But ofcourse people who play the game are 'fans' of it , Or why would they pay monthly to play it?... I honestly can't bring myself to take anyone who says that seriously
Anyway! Goodluck to you where ever you go

Well I'd rather have a mature player base of less than 10k, so it seems this is the perfect game for me!philbrik wrote:I'd rather deal with a few angry nerd teens than live with a shrunken "mature player base" of what seems less than 10k.

Re: So Much Potential
I used to play WoW at a very high level, and of course I get worried when I come from playing the largest mmorpg these days and to play Ryzom, which does seem tiny and empty in comparison.
I have to admit I admire the serenity of Ryzom. No 'HLEP PLZ LOL??' tells so far (ofc, I have yet to hit skill 50 in anything, who knows what waits ahead) but rather a lot of 'dont be shy to ask me or anyone I know for help' type messages. (3 in 2 hours after porting to mainland, thanks for the warm welcome
)
Even though the game does not seem as fast-paced or populated as wow, it's a neat little place to hang around for a couple of hours once in a while and chill. Thumbs up from here.

I'd rather play with nice people who are more interested in having fun than being the next leet kiddie.philbrik wrote:I'd rather deal with a few angry nerd teens than live with a shrunken "mature player base" of what seems less than 10k.
But what do we know.
We're all fanboys right?
You moan about grind. Well hello, it's an MMO. Every MMO has its grind, this one is no differant. It's what you do with that grind that counts. But you wouldn't know anything about that because you didn't bother to try to find ways to enjoy Rzom. We weren't the leet kiddies of WoW so you gave up and left in a temper tantrum-like huff that not only shows you don't belong here but will make most players glad you're gone.
We don't need people who don't care.
Especially not now.
Re: So Much Potential
Sorry to hear that you already left, Philbrik. I wanted to ask you which server you played on (Arispotle or Cho) and whether you had tried the other one, because I expect the population at various levels are very different on both. Glad to hear that you liked the parts of the game that don't require player interaction, the content bit is mostly up to the players. Have fun wherever you go

Well constructed points, but as said before, it would be interesting to know which server, race and what level you are.
Believe me when I say I have tried a host of games and Ryzom is the one that feels like home to me.
As Kostika said, all MMO's have grind, they just disguise it differently, go try a few and keep an open mind about Ryzom, you may come back and give it another shot.
Have fun whatever you do, in the end its a game
