Forum Code

Post by kirzen »

I'm getting the solid impression that the way this forum is coded is so very contrary to its purpose that it turns my stomach. Over the last three days I think I've lost more than 4 HOURS of my time typing messages into this bloody thing only to have it totally ____ing gobble my post up in a giant whirlwind of stupidity by asking me to log in a second time only 15 minutes later...

Can we -CHANGE- this Devs?

Its -rediculous-

vBulletin has idle timers but most of the times that's caused by issues of caching and timeouts clientside and usually have their origin in your browser software or its security settings, eg. the idle time-out.
While normally there are reasons for a higher security setting, I'd recommend trying to circumvent it: use the "preview post" button every once in a while if it won't break the flow of thought.

Strange I´ve typed loooooong posts sometimes and never had any trouble.
Is maybe your browsercache set do empty every few minutes?
Or like Xolox said, check your security settings.

I had this problem a while ago as well. For me it corrected when I checked the "remember me" button on the login screen for the forums. It seems while that is checked I dont get "timed out". If you havent done that, I would recomend doing that.

I haven't had it eat posts.. but I an annoyance I have is I'll be sitting here browsing through readin posts, when all the sudden (and I'm not inactive... changing pages at least once a minute), all the posts that were marked unread are suddenly... read!

This happen often when you close the first (original) tab you came in: like you go on general section via tab A, open a thread in a tab B, close A and come back to general from tab B: all unread are read: it's annoying as hell but very common to most of the forum I'm browsing.

On the other end, I do love the editor version when you create a post, reply to one: it makes me save so much more time! Same for the quick post version.

after suffering many long well-thought-out post losses on many many boards and blogs, anymore before I hit any sort of a Submit button I highlight and copy the entire thing. That way if it vanishes into post Void zone, I can just paste it and try again.

Be sure to refresh browser and refresh page though, so as to try and avoid double posting. Just because submit froze your browser, doesn't mean it didn't submit first.

(So far though I have to say this is a very stable board for me, much moreso than a lot I've been on for other games.)

Never had it time out or anything, and I've left a response open in a browser overnight a couple times. I've always had the 'remember me' thing on though, so don't know if thats whats doing it.

I'm admin of other fourm, completely unrelated to this, and I use SMF (And now I'll install TinyPortal). I'm very happy with them; they are in slow, but constant and solid development, with really useful features.

But with this i've never have any problem of logged out (And vBulletin is a pretty good board, It was my second choice when I made my site)...
