Attributes vs skill level

Post by bmo2112 »

Hello everybody. I would like to know something from the vets. I've been playing for some time now and in the mainland I noticed that there is a lot of cool weapons and armor which only require some attribute level to use. Is it more important to always level your attributes first to use better gear, or if I have, like, fight 40 and buy a ql 60 sword, even if I have strength 60 I won't be able to use the sword to full damage?

Leveling the attributes is very important.

That being said, it doesn't directly give you mroe damage, for instance. Your damage will be limited by your lvl

But consider this example-

You are lvl 40 melee. You could slack on strength upgrades, and use a Q40 sword. Or you could max them, and get a Q60 sword. (technically Q65, but crafters can't typically make odd Q's)

Now, at that exact point, you'd be doing the same damage with both weapons (assuming they're both max damage weapons)
However, when you go up a level, your damage with the Q40 will stay the same. But your damage with the Q60 will go up. Your damage with the Q60 will go up every time you get a level until you get to level 60.

The higher Q of the weapon relative to your lvl when you get it, the longer it will last you doing your max damage. If you slack on the upgrades and can only use smaller ones, you're going to need a new one all the time to live up to your potential.

For that reason, it's basically best to keep your upgrades maxed.

And of course there's also the fact they give you more HP, sap, stamina, etc. Having a bigger stat pool helps in general as well :)

Plus and explosion or poison cloud while harvesting or other harmful events aren't so bad when you realize "wow, I have like twice the hit points I had 5 minutes ago!"

Of course that heal self that healed you completely doesn't seem so adequate anymore. It goes round and round.

My rule of thumb is: Attributes come first. If Attribute upgrades are available, I get them with any available skill points.

The reason is this: Improved attributes will benefit all your skills across the board. More Focus means you will get better dig results by enabling you to dig longer. More Sap means you will be a better caster, because you can cast bigger spells with more penalty, and do it longer than before. And so on.

Or think about it the other way. If you buy all the big, bad-ass skills that cost huge penalties to perform, how will you pay for it if you don't have enough attributes and regeneration?
