More newbie questions

Hey there!
I just encountered this game for the first time (or rather, payed attention to some advertising for it) and I must admit to being a bit intrigued by the concept.
I've played a lot of other 'hack and slash' MMO's and always become disinterested before too long for a variety of reasons. Ryzom appears to mitigate some of those to enough of a degree to warrent some investigation in terms of the free trial.
My main question stems from my biggest gripe about most MMO's: continuity. In anything like WoW or EQ, you can go assemble a small army of the worlds most elite and talented adventurers, wade through the deepest, darkest dungeon available to kill Grishnak The Unclean, Supreme Lord of All Things Evil. Hooray, let the people rejoice, for the Lord of All Things Evil is dead! No more shall his existance taint the land and his minions, all dead by my sword, shall no more harass the Good Empire.... well, at least not until he respawns.
So why exactly did we bother killing him again? So I too can be known as Soandso, Slayer of Grishnak.... just like everybody else? Or maybe he drops something unique, and we need to kill him over and over until everybody gets that 'special item'...
Simply put, I have a very acute sense as to whether anything I do has an impact on the world I'm in. If I kill something or someone significant, does it stay dead? Do my actions help shape the world around me?
Also, I always like to hear what the main selling point of a game is for its players. People who love WoW love it for lvl 60 raids and PvP implementation. What is it that makes Ryzom worth the monthly subscription, for you?
