More newbie questions

Post by foddz »

Hey there!

I just encountered this game for the first time (or rather, payed attention to some advertising for it) and I must admit to being a bit intrigued by the concept.

I've played a lot of other 'hack and slash' MMO's and always become disinterested before too long for a variety of reasons. Ryzom appears to mitigate some of those to enough of a degree to warrent some investigation in terms of the free trial.

My main question stems from my biggest gripe about most MMO's: continuity. In anything like WoW or EQ, you can go assemble a small army of the worlds most elite and talented adventurers, wade through the deepest, darkest dungeon available to kill Grishnak The Unclean, Supreme Lord of All Things Evil. Hooray, let the people rejoice, for the Lord of All Things Evil is dead! No more shall his existance taint the land and his minions, all dead by my sword, shall no more harass the Good Empire.... well, at least not until he respawns.

So why exactly did we bother killing him again? So I too can be known as Soandso, Slayer of Grishnak.... just like everybody else? Or maybe he drops something unique, and we need to kill him over and over until everybody gets that 'special item'...

Simply put, I have a very acute sense as to whether anything I do has an impact on the world I'm in. If I kill something or someone significant, does it stay dead? Do my actions help shape the world around me?

Also, I always like to hear what the main selling point of a game is for its players. People who love WoW love it for lvl 60 raids and PvP implementation. What is it that makes Ryzom worth the monthly subscription, for you?

For me it's easy... I've been playing for 3 months, and I still find new things, paths, possibilities, etc...

It have a huge variety of things to do. Hugest than any other. And with time and patience, you can take any you want. You have the inmersion of being in a pretty huge wolrd, and you know that you will be a great of that world... if you took may time and efford in being so.

That's what worth the monthly fee for me :)

Same for me, though I've been playing for like 19-20 months now :)

Just when you think you've seen/done/discovered it all, SMACK, something new you didn't know before!

I love it :D

The community here is by far the most mature and friendly and helpful and fantastic and wonderful and lots of other nice words that I've ever found. *pant* Commas, Nilly, commas....

to vaguely answer your main question.. there are no instances whatsoever in ryzom (well your apartment is but that really doesnt count) the world is the world, so when a team goes and kills a boss for example its dead. Now obviously things respawn otherwise the hunters would get bored quick, regular mobs very fast, named in a few hours, bosses in a few days.

On top of that we have invasions, like the one currently going on, generally at the finale there is a big nasty thing (or 4) to kill, again its a one off event and requires most of the server to take down. So i think you can find some continuity there. There are no missions to go kill some special mob that pops when you take it.

What makes Ryzom worth it for me? All the friends i have made, the community is fantastic, and if they are all asleep pr digging :)

Been here almost 5 months now and the list of what I need to know and can do is Way way longer then the list of things I do know. Still learning, still growing. Usually by now in another MMO you'd know what is expected of ya and continue on towards that goal. Here the are no goals except what you set for yourself.
Server: Arispostle
Main Character: Bosse
Guild: Fluffy Bunnies, High Officer.

this is a link of the posted development track. There is a long-term storyline, part of the gameplay is "Rites" to learn more about the history of the world, and supposedly the storyline takes into account some of the results of the large-scale events.
