Bios problem ...I think but not sure if its memory too. :P

Post by drachle »

Here are the steps I took to update my Bios exactly:

1. Booted from formatted WinXP Dos floppy disk which contained my Bios upgrade files (I know they are the correct files for certain). Did my upgrade from the runme file there.

2. Powered OFF my computer and cleared CMOS using the jumper from default 1-2 to 2-3 for 2 minutes (it said 1 minute but I wanted to make sure :P ).

3. Powered ON went into CMOS and reconfigured everything like I had it b4.

4. Reboot and everything works fine. All my programs including net java games, 3DS MAX, Photoshop whatever is CPU and Memory intensive. They all open up in the same time and work fine together, so I doubt its a memory problem or CPU affaire but I'm no savvy so I could be wrong.

Problem I get with only the RYZOM client program (and I should say I was having lag and the regular freeze problems b4 the upgrade):

I hear 5 to 6 beeps from my computer every 20 seconds or so. It doesn't happen with any other program. I have the Ryzom game set up with minimal graphical configurations as was suggested in this forum by Zerlin http://www.ryzom.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15647
in the above link though I have a G-Force3 Ti 200 graphics card, 630M RAM, 1.4G CPU and WinXP SP2 installed.

Can anyone tell me what this is due to? I have no idea. I am about to try to remove the RAM chips and Replace them tightly just to see if that may be it but any other suggestions would be well appreciated.

You could try downloading memtest from http://www.memtest.org and give your RAM a workout.
I used it the other day when my system was locking up. Ends up that it wasn't my RAM or CPU but the latest version of Bit Torrent was locking my system solid at odd intervals for no particular reason.

We have been finding that things seem to have been raised a notch graphically wth last week's patch. So a GF3 probably will not run Ryzom very well anymore.

Thank you for the link I will try that now.

I'm sorry to hear about the G-Force3 limitations now. I hope I get the "moula" together to get a better one but I doubt that happens any time soon as I already need to buy some RAM. ;-)

hmmm.. guess Ryzom will have to go on hold. Too bad because with the free trial, I was starting to take a liking to the environment and friendly atmosphere I found in game to the point I was going to buy it. Oh well... maybe later I guess. :(

gforce 3 ti200 has no problems running Ryzom atm. with the last patches, dont think too much has changed for me.

i have gf3 ti 200, 1G ram, athlon (barton) xp 2500, win xp sp2, nvidia 84.21 drivers.
ryzom is in 1024x768 fullscreen, textures low, other settings so that quality is low but visible distance high. fpx around 20 (always has been)

it's not overheating warning beeps are they ? (cant think of anything else)

Thanks a heap to both of ya (Zerlin for the technical help which guided me towards a solution which I had a feeling I was going to do soon) and blaah for confirming my fears were not to be taken too seriously.... by me! ;)

Explanation: Zerlin, MemTest was doing the job it was intended to but after hearing the beeps again during the tests (I wasn't sure if that was normal or if I was actually force feeding corrupted hardware) I stopped the tests and it got me thnking there must be something with my memory since Ryzom is so mem-intensive it must be the only program needing all of my RAM, therefore touching that particular faulty Mem chip. (A step in the right direction?)

Yes. Because I took out the last SDRAM chip and lo and behold, no beeps anymore. Putting it back solidly gave me the same beeps. Three times was enuff rebooting for today so I decided to take it off and the game works fine even with only 512M RAM. It's laggy but that's to be expected until I get my next 512M tomorrow. :)

So blaah, yes, Ryzom is great on a G-Force3 Ti 200, though laggy with 512M only. Tomorrow may just be my better day! :)

EDIT: And I even have everything working smoothly enough at Normal graphics modes. :P

Thanks again!
