Any self-sufficient hunters/crafters getting by with mainly animal parts?

Post by miths999 »

I am currently playing a Fyros character still on the newbie island with fighting/crafting/harvesting all in the 20s, and this time around I have decided that I would like a character that can generally supply himself with weapons and armor (probably heavy, but I am considering a mix of heavy and medium - style over effeciency :) ).

However, I am slowly coming to the conclusion that I probably do not possess the patience required for serious harvesting (or rather prospecting) and I am speculating how much tougher my life as a fighter (probably solo at least 50% of the time) will be if I choose to use armor crafted from animal parts (meaning generally fine quality) rather than using harvested choice or better mats.

I do expect to either buy weapons or spend the necessary time harvesting for them myself, as I will probably not have a very good or easy time if I have to settle for subpar damage and speed as well as lower damage resistance from the armor.

Anyone who can enlighten me on whether it is completely idiotic (okay, I think I can live with this one :) ) and downright suicide if I spend most of my fighting time in armor crafted from fine mats?
Is it possible to find combinations of fine animal mats that might give me a reasonably satisfactory result?

Of course I could just buy my armor from a "real" crafter like everybody else, but I like the idea of being self-sufficient in a number of areas.
Of course I am hoping the devs will eventually allow us to find choice or even better mats on creatures other than named ones. I bet I am not the only one :) .

Certainly it's feasible! It's entirely possible to use only vendor-bought basic weapons and armor. it won't be 'easy', but then would you really want it to be? :)

Being totally self-sufficient about things can be done, but there's no really point in that. Other players are in-game too for you to rely on them, not just to have conversations with.

You make your own forte so other people can rely you on there. But as for the question: it can be done, as there's nothing stopping you from doing it, but it's just pointless (and if you narrow your choices all the more better chances of you being very good at something).

There are combinations for mob mats to make decent armors, but the problem there is that a harvester can supply even better mats a lot faster. That's why it's good to rely on harvesters for mats, not just because the mats are good but mainly because you get them faster.

My example for mob armor in Witherings, zoraï lands, is: yber leather for armor shell, slaveni moss for lining, torbak fangs for stuffing and izam ligaments for the clip. The product from those will be very good given the protection value, but then again: harvester can supply even better overall armor parts and a lot faster.

Anyway, my answer is: yes, you can get by with mob material armors, having an armor on made out of harvested mats isn't defining the outcome of battles all that much, it just makes your life easier and lessens the downtime between battles. Of course, there's those named mobs to get good mob material from, but seriously: they aren't that high in numbers.

I am certainly not against relying on other people for certain tasks, skills etc. :) , my main reason for wanting to use animal parts at least for the early to mid levels, is that I like crafting and would very much like to make my own armor and perhaps weapons (nice with a diversion from combat occasionally - and besides, I like the feeling of using things I have made myself), but I can easily see myself getting very tired with harvesting even before leaving for the mainland.

Most crafters/harvesters I have talked to during the two weeks I have spent in the game seem to have more than enough work cut out for them just supplying themself, but perhaps as more people join it will be more common to see people who harvest only to sell the materials to crafters, rather than the crafter/harvester combo that seems to be in use now.

Newbie zone was paradise as you could do about 10 missions per camp with quatered mats only - but mainland is different. above q20 its near to impossible to get along as a crafter without harvesting and/or trading.

As far as I know by experience, as hunter/crafter you can craft pretty good armor and quite good weapons, if it's for melee fight. ranged fight need so much mats that you'll be lvl250 fighter (only by chasing for mats) way before :D

You can make a lot (a BIG lot) of money by selling basic mats to NPC and saving fine mats for other crafter/yourself. And only by yourself.
The money balance is positive : you'll get more money than needed to improve your craft skill with npc (the "buying lowq-mats/selling crafted" manipulation), upgrade your equipment, buying mektoub, teleport ticket or even having apartment.

As Matis, I didn't spotted any choice/excellent mats from "solo-able" mobs. And I'm starting to have a nice database of "who drop what" :D . website coming soon...

I'm essentially self sufficient, although I really can't dedicate the time it takes to prospecting and harvesting. I'm having trouble getting top quality mats off kills. What I've got so far, keeps me ticking over and I can still make money fame through combat, but without the support of a dedicated harvester and crafter I'm always going to be well behind most people in terms of damage output and ability to kill bugger things.

There is a real sense of achievement when you manage to craft your own kit and then go out and use it. But, also, there is a sense of envy when you see the next fighter using something that is vastly superior in quality compared to your kit. I'd say early on, you'll be able to handle being self sufficient and crafting from quartered mats, but later on, when the mobs get tough, you'll probably want to join and guild, make some harvester and crafter friends and just plough the mats you get and the dapper you make into the good of the guild, and get far better quality stuff that way.
