I just moved over to the mainland and have a couple of questions (loving the game btw)
Guilds
I always play in a small guild based around IRL friends and family (there are 6 of us) how do small guilds fit in? I know we cannot attempt to take over ops but can we benefit based on faction (we have not chosen yet). How much PvP is available to us as a small guild?
Cats
A very friendly guy gave my Brother and I some cats, love them! but as a small guild how can we get more? do we need to trade or can we get them from ops?

Welcome to Atys, pharabus and friends 
There are countless small guilds on Atys but as you say, they are unlikely to hold an outpost alone. Alliances have been made allowing some to hold or have access to outposts since anyone can join an outpost battle on either side. Choosing a faction will likely open some doors and close others, I wouldn't rush into a decision, if I were you. Thankfully, having to do a number of missions to gain the necessary Fame almost ensures that any decision will not be hasty
Catalysts are fed directly from outposts into the owning guild's vault, but they can be traded so ask around. q50 cats, I believe, are often given away to make some room in guildhalls. This is often true of q100s also, however I think the influx of new players from Silan may have made these scarce now. You might also like to look at this thread.
