Ruins of Silan - Guidance Needed

Post by veruk »

So, I'm somewhere between 10 and 20 in all my skills, thanks to the adventuring I've already done in Newbieland. From what I've read here, I should focus on a single crafting category (armor, in my case) so I don't spread my Skill Points too thin. I've also read that I should save up 100k for a mektoub once I get to the mainland.
My problem is, I'm still using either the Refugee equipment I started with or the mediocre Light Armor I've made, and (thanks to a misguided attempt to branch into Melee Weapon crafting) my only weapons are two QL 10 daggers.
So, generally speaking of course, is it worthwhile to invest in store-bought armor and weapons, or should I tough it out with just what I can make? It seems like it'll be a loooong while before I'm well-equipped if I go that route, but store items seem overpriced, and I do prefer to save dapper wherever possible.
Thoughts?

You get a very nice set of medium armor for completing the "guy on the hill" quest line. Has nice stat bonuses. For mosts of the quests, do you get a piece of armor/weapon: fight(2H sword), magic(Q40 amp), Craft(chest piece, I think), Harvest(either legs or gloves). So you will need to suplement, but it shouldn't cut into your savings plan for the mainland.

See you over there.

It'll be a very long time until you can make all the armor items you'll need for yourself, as well as the jewels, weapons, etc, etc. Focus on one thing at a time if you enjoy crafting, or just level your fighting skills first and buy armor once you get to the mainlands.

Leveling crafting requires a lot of materials, and you generally loose money buying through a trader from other players to resell what you've crafted. Meanwhile, once you're level 100 or so, farming materials for your crafting level 50 needs becomes very easy.

As for buying NPC items, I definetly wouldn't recommend it, as they usually have half the stats for thrice the price of a player made item... But if you really need something, NPC's are a last resort.

In the end, I'd say don't worry too much about gear while in Ruins of Silan. The stuff that NPC's provide or players can make is pretty much junk beyond level 30, so if you're looking for quality 50+ items, you really should have a chat with the teleporter. :)

First --

You get good armor and weapons from the quests. Do all the quests for all the professions, even ones you don't want to level in... it's good experience IMO, and it will give you all the equipment you need to get yourself as far as you wish to go on the island.

As for crafting, well...

I am continuing to craft melee and armor, but only spending the points on jewel stuff for now, because I intend to go into jewel crafting (among other things). It just seems neat, and different from the more standard armor/weapon crafting. You get general "crafting" points and you don't use the same materials crafting weapons and armor as you do jewels (at least the early ones), so you can go ahead and earn XP and gain skill points, but then use them mainly for jewels, and you should end up ahead in the bargain.

Of course it takes longer... so it depends if you are after speed or skill points. I am in no rush so I'll take the extra points.

Most of my Silan alt's armour is what other players have made and sold to the merchants. I just browse and buy whatever has the best protection factor.
Jelathnia, Kasarinia, KianShi, Maethro, ShuaLi, and OPaxie (Arispotle)
TeiJeng (Leanon)

I think you should get at least another weapon - the noob dagger just sucks. Buy a player crafted weapon, set the filters at the shop to item level 20 to find something suitable.

He means that you should move to the mainland, for q50+ items say.

West of the ruined throne room on Silan there is a npc called Karavan Teleporter, but in fact she isn't very chatty and won't send you to the mainland. When you want to move on you must talk to Chiang the Strong once again.

have been messing about on the starter land..
there is some very nice gear available as quest rewards.. some from even the early quests, including a perfectly serviceable one handed axe, and a magic amp, with more stuff available later on.
These are quite adequate to get you going, and even if you cant be bothered to do the missions, a lot of players seem to be putting their gear up for resale (just make sure you look closely at the prices before you buy anything )

I am very impressed with what has been done with the " New Player Experience ", It is much better than the previous newbie islands - although healing seems a bit difficult to level after it splits, I may trylevelling off fear instead :p
