Welcome to our Giant Root Ball! 
First off, don't judge the game by the Starter Island, its not a good indicator. Use your time there to get comfortable with the controls and learn a bit about each of the four skill trees, then 'port to the mainland which is more populated. Generally lots of folks about to help, unless its Season Change Time, then generally most folks are out diggin' somewhere or hunting Boss Mobs.
Don't feel bashfull about hollerin' for help in /region, whether it be for a Rez or just some info or guidance. Most everyone is ready, willin', and able to help.
Have you created a character yet? Picked a race? If not, best advice I can give is get one each of the Craft, Magic, and Harvest packs. Skip the Fight pack, you get fight anyway.
Most everyone levels all four trees (which split into many branches as you rise higher) at least a little, if nothing else stuff you craft and/or harvest can be sold for dapper to buy a better weapon or magic amplifier, and even melee fighters will need to heal occassionally (a magic skill).
Let us know what race you choose, and what your character name is!
