Newb question

Post by newtinsf »

Does anyone know the advantages/disadvantages to using the aimed shots in the melee skill tree? I notice there are skills for things like head shot, arms, legs, etc.

I've had both good and bad experiences with the "aim" stanzas.

Good: In PvP, especially in one-on-one duels, I've used the "Aim Humanoid Head" with very good success, especially if my opponent is wearing light or medium armour, or is one of those "vain" types who never wears a helmet even in heavy armour.

Bad: In battling Critters I've had limited to no success with the "Aim" stanzas. Actually have better success with the "Accurate Attack" stanza.

Experiment, go with what works for you. I have a buddy who uses the Aim stanzasonly for PvP, and never uses Aim or Accurate attack for battling critters. Others have told me they like the aim stanzas.

to be totally honest i wouldn't waste your skill points on them..
definateley not when you are starting out anyways.
Later on ... and i mean much later on I suppose a smart homin might realise that his lvl 250 pistol skill works well against a mage if he adds the "target humanoid hands" stanza to his attack thus making it damn near impossible for his opponent to cast.. but untill then I suggest you stick with the increased damage and accurate attack stanzas :D

aim is (imho) only useful* when you have weapon built with outpost Tekorn Bramble mats, which will increase critical chance.

so, if you do critical hit to head, then opponent is stunned for a while.

* high critical chance will be worth the extra hp/stam what aim stanza needs, little more extra damage (for light/med armor w/o helmet) is not worth it (imho).

oh yeah.. in theory, cant be bothered to track down op mat to get some ingame experiance in this.

Unfortunatly the critical hit rate is so low that these lines are next to useless

The main advantage is that you can choose to hit a body part with less protection. In practice, I have never noticed any creature with varying protection over their body - but I've not looked into it, to be honest. Bandits, tribes and players, however, often don't wear helmets, so Aim humanoid head has some use.

The second advantage is that if you constantly aim at and hit a certain body part then when you do get a critical (5% chance standard) you can know the effect of that. A critical to the head cause a 2 second (?) stun, for example. Watch your system info to see how critical effects work, and please note that creatures and NPCs do not use stamina.

The disadvantage is that Aim costs as much to use in an action as Increase Damage (or Accurate Attack). There is no comparison unless your opponent is wearing heavy armour (or vain and no helmet). And then Ignore Armour is a cheaper stanza to use, anyway, requiring that you use a piercing weapon.

In my opinion the Aim stanzas are an extremely valuable part of the game system, but they are massively overpriced in terms of action credits and should be reduced in cost by at least a factor of 4. As they stand, I would follow previous advice and not waste your SP on them until you have so many you don't know what else to spend them on :)

I think most about aimed shots was already mentioned, beside the fact that there is a certain level of aimed shot that give a stamina credit, that isn't available alone. But I have to check in game which one that was.
