New, couple of questions.

Post by viktro »

Ive read the forums a bit and the website but i still have some questions. Ive played mmorpgs for a while.

How does the pvp work, is it a flag system where some people can delcare that they are pvp or what? Is it balanced, are there alot of rules and restrictions on it?

Are there instances, private dungeons for groups and stuff or is it one persistant world with spawns and what not?

Yah, thats about it for now.

Hello and warm welcome Viktro

PVP has to be toggled on. A few highlevel areas have GVG (guild vs guild) and we have had FVF (faction vs faction) war. Recently we was given Outposts, a drill that provides the guild owning it with "XP crystals" (doubling your leveling) and they are fought over.

Balanced, that depends... your character is not locked in a class - you can level magic, healing, ranged fight or melee any way you wish. Ranged is probably more difficult than the others.

No private instances yet, just a big living world. However, the Ring is in the pipeline and will give us player-designed scenarios. Don't know if they will be like instances or open to go in and out from.

Welcome to our giant root ball! :)

PvP comes in a few flavors:

Duels - one on one, consensual. You can always say "No".

Outpost Battles - PvP in an area, intended to be GvG, but usually winds up FvF. You do NOT have to participate even if you are in the area, you actually have to "opt-in" to participate.

Guild v. Guild (GvG) - Certain areas are always GvG, such as Nexus and Prime Roots. In these areas you are attackable by anyone in a different guild at any time. "Unguilded" is considered a guild for GvG areas. You can team across guild lines, but currently you cannot heal across guild lines even in team (a documented but unresolved bug).

Open PvP - Currently only in Matis Arena, but in there EVERYONE is attackable by ANYONE, and no one can heal (again, a documented and unresolved bug).

Faction v. Faction (FvF, essentially Kami vs Karavan) - pretty much closed to neutrals except during certain events where your "faction" is determined by your Fame rather than your declared allegiance. Currently FvF is determined by your fame and is an "opt-in" system involving a PvP "tag". If you are "tagged up", anyone of the other faction may attack you at any time provided they are also "tagged up". If you're not tagged, you can't participate. Neutrals cannot tag up, so they cannot participate. "Spires" are coming sometime after R2, and intended to be FvF, with Neutrals being non-participants (but that may be changing, if I read the interview with Jessica Mulligan right).

Certain guilds, such as the Samsara, will hold gladiator style events where participants fight one-on-one using the Duelling mechanism. Samsara events are usually Knife fights (daggers only) or Sword and Shield (1H sword and shield). I've also seen boxing matches, and someone is trying to organize a tournament for Ranged Fighters, Melees and Mages.
Now, I probably got something wrong here, so expect someone to jump in and call me a noob anytime now! :D

thanks for the answers, i got a few more questions.

this pvp flag, is it permanant, and how does someone with a pvp flag up interact with other people in the world who are not pvp?

i really enjoy pvp and im trying to get a sense for how much pvp plays a part in the game, the fact that there are benifits for having an outpost thing is nice. But how much would you say is pvp apart of the game? Do alot of people activily participate in pvp? you know stuff like that

if you turn FvF flag on, then you stuck there for 30min.
after 30 min you can turn it off again. if you involved in FvF (healing, nuking, kicking someone FvF enabled and active), then you stuck there for 10 min.

on/off timers are quick (dont remember them)
But how much would you say is pvp apart of the game?
atm, there is Outposts and prime roots (only 2 out of 10 areas) have some kind of meaning to PvP ;-)

but later (much much later i'm afraid), Nevrax is adding spires, which makes FvF number one activity. FvF enabled chars will then have buffs/debuffs from spires, so in theory, there will be much fun ;-)

The PvP flag (or tag) id only up so long as you choose to leave it up (with some timers to avoid things like tagging up, nuking someone, then dropping your tag immediately before the player can rez/respawn and respond in kind). I believe that timer is like 30 seconds, but those who are more in tune with PvP can answer better than I.

There's TONS of things to do in this world that have no involvement with PvP. Those of us who choose not to PvP play right along side with those who do. We fight Kitin, hunt bosses, forage for materials, craft, and generally have fun RP'ing.

PvP has its place in this game, but so does PvE, and from my experience RP'ing and social interaction are more important than either, and are part of both. PvP is all some people do I think, but most who enjoy PvP also actively participate in PvE and in the Foraging/Crafting skills.

There are also a fair number of players whose only participation in PvP is participating in the occasional friendly duel. Each player is equally important to the game, and there is no "end-game" because the game is desinged to never end.

This is not a game where you are either PvP or something else. The skill tree is so open that you can (and most do) participate in all aspects of the world. This is not a "shoot'em up" game.

I'd suggest you contact some of the players who heavily participate in PvP in-game, talk to them about your concerns and desires. A quick scan of recent posts inthe General section should give you some good leads.

It's not permanent, no. The faction flag takes 2 minutes to switch on, then you can't turn it off for at least 30 minutes. Once that half hour is up it takes but 30 seconds to switch off. If you participate in any FvF action - attacking anyone from the opposite faction or healing someone from your own faction that is actively engaged - then you will not be able to turn it off until at least 10 minutes after that action.

Hehe, 3 of us making an answer at once :)

Again thanks for the answers, you have cleared alot of things up.

One thing i was trying to ask before but didnt was how much does pvp effect the pve game? When raiding would pvp play a part at all? Does guild vs guild pvp extend into the pve world? Say one guild is raiding or doing something that is pve, could another guild attack that person or is pvp confined to certain areas?

What perctage of the population would you is activily involved in pvp?
