Forum request: Can the thread starter be allowed to close a thread?

Post by oldmess »

Is it possible to change the forum software or it's configuration in a way that will allow a thread starter to close his/her own threads? Often times we see the original topic get fully answered, but some side topic (usually not constructive) goes off. If the creator could close the thread without having to wait for a moderator, that might help a little.

(Sure, the off-topic folks could just start another thread, but if it was something worth talking about, shouldn't they have done that anyway instead of taking the original topic off it's rails?)

well good and bad could come of that -

obviously we all see the good because when thread starter becomes unhappy with their thread - they might want to stop it before it ruins any more feelings

bad though - i can see this bieng easily abused and stopping all sides from giving their criticism - which if its reasonable, can be a great loss

i think we should keep that decision up to the mods - maybe instead, we could have some way to directly contact a mod and ask for the thread to be closed if they deem it fit.

The bad is easily overcome. If you feel that you have additional things that need to be said, start your own thread and reference the original one. But that means committing a bit more thought to it then just reply/flame/submit.

Unless the forum software has been modded already (or there are vast changes between v3.0.1 and v3.0.5), it is technically possible.

However, I don't believe it should be changed - imo a better solution would be to make it clear to people that they should ask a member of the moderator team (ie Souls, shads, xavier, whoever) to lock their thread for them. They have the right to do this (I believe, feel free to correct me) and its been done before... just posting "please lock this thread" won't do any good unless the moderators read every post on the forums, and given how busy things can get sometimes, I don't think we should expect the guys+girls at jolt/nevrax to spend their time trawling through it all ;)

Feel free to drop us a PM if you need a thread of yours locked for some reason - we do receive and read them all.

In my opinion Vbulletin arent as good as IPB, IPB are alot easier to manage and navigate, and plenty of add ons make it such a great board.
